im moving to florida from long island with my boyfriend this summer and we need help finding a good area to live in.
we're both college students looking into either broward community college campus in fort lauderdale or miami dade college campus on NE 2nd ave (wherever that is).

we want to live in a place that is safe, has lots of stuff to do, (shopping, night life, etc) is semi-close to the school, and is metropolitan. NOT SUBURBAN.

we have a car but would obviously rather not use it a lot. ideally we would want to use public transportation or walk everywhere but still live in a trendy, student type area with lots to do.

can anyone suggest good neighborhoods to live in for both fort lauderdale and miami? thanks so much. we're coming actually this weekend to visit and look around so posts asap would be awesome

if its possible, are there any places that apply that are not completely taken over by tourists?

I would DEFINITELY go with Surfside in Miami-Dade and look no further. Close to South Beach but with half the crime and it's own little bar and club scene, trendy but not in your face. Just check it out and enjoy. Shop at Bal Harbour and Aventura and that side of town has restaurants galore. Surfside is also pretty walkable with it's own pedestrian friendly Publix and what not. Go go go go!

However, price range? If your price range is under 1000 a month, than downtown Hollywood/Hollywood beach. If it's over 1,000, Surfside.
