Hi,
It looks like I will be accepting a job and moving to Fort Lauderdale (Northeast Broward County) in the near future. I'm a 39 year old single female and am seeking advice regarding the best communities/places for me to live. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I'm considering doing the same (33 yr old male) and this post might help some. Or possibly confuse you even more, which is the state I'm in right now. This is somewhat generalized and not based on first-hand experience, but it what resonated with me as of the post date. The more I think about it the more I realize I just have to go down there and check out all the different areas by myself.

Stay along the coast, stay away from the western corridors: they are better for families, if they like the suburbs, that is. I think the eastern corridor between I-95 and the intracoastal or, better, between US1 and the beach, is a much nicer place to live, and not just for a single person. Visit the entire eastern county, there are several great neighborhoods in the northern coast line, from the Palm Beach county line to Ft Lauderdale. I lived in eastern Hollywood and loved it, but you do not want to commute north south if you do not have to. Good luck!

What is your price range? Are you looking to buy or rent? There are a variety of options.

Hi,
I'm definitely looking to rent at this point. I'm very flexible regarding rent costs.

Check out downtown Delray Beach...my all-time favorite S Florida community for laid back cafes and restaurants, night life, galleries, farmer's market, auction house, neighborhood feel and great beach. Pretty houses and upscale lofts and buildings with lots of amenities abound, all in walking distance to above.

I have a friend leaving West Broward area for Jacksonville, and I am going to give you the same advice... you are looking at a very big move, you need to visit the area.

Now that you are listening to my advice and have decided to visit, how will you decide on what areas to check out? Get familar with the major roads - they are:
Heading from east to west, the following roads cut through South Florida and move traffic parallel to the coast - A1A (coastal road), US1 (inland from the intracoastal waterway), I95, Florida Turnpike, State Road 7, University Drive, Sawgrass Expressway, I75.

In Northeast Broward, From Deerfield down to Pompano and North Lauderdale, several large arteries feed traffic from the coast to the western reaches. Anything that has an intersection with I95 is a major east/west artery. Goto this link for a great map of the Turnpike system and other major roadways. http://www.floridasturnpike.com/maps...8/mainline.pdf

Now you can see how a grid determines how you can commute to and from your new job. The Northeast Broward area benefits from the Sawgrass Expressway, I95 and US1. You can live in Palm Beach, out as far as Coral Springs in the west or areas south including Fort Lauderdale.

South Florida is a great place to live, but as with every place, there are drawbacks. The trick is to know a few locals who can point you in the right direction. Your budget will get squeezed in the most popular parts of town, if you are close to water - especially the ocean and intracoastal waterway.

Most people in South Florida MUST use a vehicle to function. There are parts of SoFla that will allow you to get away from the use of a car when you are at home, nestled into an urban area, otherwise, expect to use your car for everything.

Hope I have helped you with the initial steps. I love working with transplants because I use to be one, 20 years ago! Feel free to ask any questions or advice about living down here anytime!
