I can't believe I'm writing this. I was a student at McArthur High School and in 1967 about all I had to look forward to was being drafted upon graduation into the army and being sent off to Vietnam. After graduating in 1967, one of the easiest jobs to get was as a wards man at the nut house. Now, not being a bad person and having maybe the worst grade point averages of anyone ever graduating I took their introductory course along with some of my friends and they handed me a ring of keys, a white uniform and a schedule to the most insane job, I ever had. Man, do I have a **** load of stories. Many involving what might and probably should be considered criminal acts. Of course in those days just about anything we did was considered OK. If anyone wanted to hear more. I could goon forever. But, I will wait to be Asked before I bother.

Are people still that naïve? These people aren't the crazies, these are people who had and have a mental illness which thankfully now can be better treated. Just like someone with diabetes or heart disease or even cancer. It is a horrible disease and these people did not choose to have it. Thank God for medicine today. May all of you who don't understand about mental illness please do some research and educate yourself.

Several people have died at SFSH. The 2 women who work at the front desk at SFSH have been there for 40 years. They know EVERYTHING about the original old despicable demonized institution

Default South Florida State Hospital

Hello pinesresident, please let me know if you posted any of your research concerning South Florida State Hospital on the web. I would definitely want to read any findings, since someone very dear to me was a patient in this hospital during the 70s. Also, dok49 mentioned he worked there...Let me know whatever you can. I was just a child during the 70s and am now trying to find out about this family member's history with just bits and pieces to go on. Any information is greatly appreciated.

A friend of our family actually worked there in the 80's and I remember it was located somewhere between ft lauderdale and the hollywood speedway out in the boondocks. I just wonder it it still exists to this day.

Yeah it just relocated to Tallahassee and some call it Govt. now!
