Can anyone offer any apartment advice in the Ft. Lauderdale area please? I've looked up some ratings on apartmentratings.com and they seem pretty scary! I am looking to move to FL prob within the next year and Ft. Lauderdale is one of the areas I am looking into. So if anyone could please help me that would be greatly appreciated. Apartment wise-I am looking for a 2bedroom in a safe, family oriented area with decent schools. Thanks in advance!

Hello There:
What are some of the specifics you are looking for? Beach or Suburban? How far of a commute, where in Ft Laud will you be working or going to school? Rental communities can be kind of scary and expensive, in all fair warning. Lets narrow down your wants and needs to find you the right place. People on here are very helpful, we moved down here from Michigan about a yr and 1/2 ago. And they helped me alot.

Ah now I that I have looked at your post again.....I live in Plantation, I like it a lot...the corner I am in is very family friendly, there is lots to do also! Many community programs for all ages, my 2 yr old and I keep very busy. I am not an expert on schools because A) Little one is not school age, B) we are going w/a private school. So, CSprings was nice too, we are happier in Plantation. We are closer to Ft Lauderdale, are in a spot where we can walk to shopping plaza's and local parks. My hubby works just outside of Ft Laud and he has a 20/25min commute, surface streets no freeway. There are condo places around where we live as well, but you must do your homework when renting a condo. Hopefully you will be able to visit SoFLa before you rent. We have really been lucky w/both of the landlords we have dealt with. You must be careful that the property you rent is not in foreclosure. Some llords are renting their prop for everything they can before forclosure. Renting a private prop you will need to put up a sec deposit, so if start up is tight then rental communities is where you ll need to start. Friends of ours live in a nice local in Weston as well, but your commute to Ft Lauderdale might take a little bit. I also hear good things about their schools. There is a rental community near me called St Tropez Apt Homes, it looks nice when I drive by but that s all the info I know about it. Realtors were not much help for us, your better off doing your own research and then enlisting them to help you with the showings and paperwork I can't say it enough, homewk, homewk, homewk! You need to do homewk. Keep searching and keep asking questions. Good luck!

With traffic the beach to Ft Laud from C Springs was anywhere from 25-30 min....Plantation is about 20-25, Sometimes in C Springs we would go to Deerfield Beach it seemed a little closer then Ft Laud, but not as nice. Weston is further probably 30-40 mins, depending on traffic.

Thanks!

To the OP-we need more information. Where will you be working? Price range?

One thing that you need to be careful of is that many people are losing their security deposits when they rent from private individuals who lose their homes. I recommend that you start out in a rental community that is corporate owned when you first get here. Once you are here a while you may decide to move.

If you choose to rent from an individual keep in mind that it is the law for landlords to take your security deposit and deposit it in an escrow account in YOUR NAME to be returned to you at the end of the lease term (less payment for any damages). Most people do not do this. Even though it is the law insist that it be in the lease and insist on seeing the account statements when you rent. For most people this is a ton of money and you need to protect it.

I know at least 5 couples IRL who have been screwed by landlords who stole their security deposits.
