Yes, love you know that, I have not been a fan of the beach for years because of Jones. However, I loved being on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale for New Years - It was so unbelievable!

My favorite time living down here was actually when I lived in a condo directly on the ocean. When/if we finally sell the property we're on (I hate this economy - I just want to get on with my life, people!), that's exactly where we're going back to, at least until my daughter graduates high school. Then who knows. That too will depend on where the economy is I suppose...

I like the Birch State Park area, park in the parking lot for maybe $5.00 and just walk across the street to the beach. They have bathrooms too!

Is Jones Beach that bad? I used to just skip it and go all the way to Robert Moses, every weekend in the summer, even after I moved from NYC to Yonkers. I always liked it at Robert Moses.

We in Weston are at the edge of the Everglades, that could be considered "beach" too

Also in addition to what others have written, I like to go to the Red Reef beach in Boca every once in a while. It is great for snorkling and very clean. Parking was $18 per day last time I went. But well worth it.

Another nice stretch of the beach is Sunny Isles, Haulover beach. $5 for parking and is well maintained. But beware beyond a certain point you will encounter clothing optional area.

Jones is a step above Rockaway, which is a step above Orchard, which is just a step above the hudson or East River. You get my point - Robert Moses was and still is nicer than Jones, but damn the water is cold and still it is pretty brown. One could never compare Robert to any beach in Florida let alone South Florida.

I always like Smith Point. It was much less built up than the beaches further west on LI.
