We are a young couple living in Grand Bahama and ready to move back to the states. Need to live in FLL or MIA area, but prefer residential area close to city, young, hip, multiculatural, safe and inexpensive enough that our dreams could be a reality. Would like suggestions where to start when we visit. I'm an educator and my hubby works on boats, would like to be near water. Is all this possible?

Depends on your budget. Some neighborhoods to look into would be Surfside (close to Miami Beach but less expensive - it's not exactly hip, but is now hipper than it was...)), Hollywood Beach (might be the winner), and Delray Beach (if you would ever consider PB County.)

The best neighborhoods for a couple in your situation in Miami-Dade County are Brickell (Miami), Coral Gables, Coconut Grove (Miami), Miami Beach, and Aventura/Sunny Isles Beach. The neighborhoods I would recommend in Broward County are Las Olas (Fort Lauderdale) and East Hollywood.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

If you chose Miami, live in either South Beach or in Brickell.
If you chose Fort Lauderdale, chose Las Olas/downtown.

I should warn you though, those places aren't cheap. The further away from them you live, the less expensive the cost of living is. For example, a one-bedroom luxury condo in Las Olas will be at least $1400/month and won't include utilities or cable tv. You'll have to pay extra for those things. So expect to pay at least $1500-$1600 per month. Brickell is comparable in terms of price. South Beach is more expensive than the other two.

There are quite a few apartments available in the Las Olas area, mostly in older, small one or two story buildings...still not exactly inexpensive, though it's not hard to find a one bedroom in the $800-$1000/month range. I found one a couple months ago and am pretty happy with it...the prices were not nearly this low a year ago, or so, last time I looked...had to rent way out in the suburbs...

Well its either hip or inexpensive. You have to choose one or the other. The two do not go hand in hand. FortLauderdaleGuy is right about the one and two bedrooms that are older, but I found that many don't include a washer/dryer in the unit. Also, none of them include utilities, cable tv, or internet access. If you add those costs into the equation then a $800 rent is really $1000. If you have a reliable car and don't mind living a little further away from the "hip areas" then you can find rents that are about $100-200 cheaper and include more amenities. But you have to do your research.
