I was looking at pembroke pines on google maps...seems like a lot of the canals and ditches everywhere. So I imagine quite a few snakes too?

How are a lot of these yards for having small kids?

This thread gives me the heebie-geebies!!!

I'm in the market for vacation property, and these thoughts never crossed my mind! So would a ground floor condo in fort lauderdale, nearish to water be asking for trouble in the critter department?

As a general rule, the old addage "If you don't bother them, they don't bother you" holds true. There are many species of snakes found in Florida, and some are poisonous. Florida has alligators and snakes near just about any body of water, including canals and ditches.

The more built up areas like Fort Lauderdale have far less snakes and alligators. Also, the eastern cities are close to salt water and there are no snakes in salt water around here. The snakes live in fresh water or areas with lots of natural foliage. Suburban Palm Beach County has WAY more snakes than Broward because it is more wooded and not as built up. Canals run through just about every Broward suburb, so I'd imagine the risk is the same in Davie as it is in Pembroke Pines or Coral Springs.

Snakes are part of life down here and you are bound to encounter one at some point. As someone else mentioned, the "black racers" are the most common snakes. They look like garden snakes and are harmless to humans unless you try and catch them. Then they'll bite you. But they typically live in grass and bushes in your yard.

Canals are generally fresh water or salt water?

Canals are fresh water. The Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway are salt water. Alligators only live in fresh water. Snakes live primarily in wooded areas or in fresh water bodies. So canals, lakes, ponds, and areas of thick brush or foliage. Eastern Broward County is so developed that there is hardly any wooded areas where these creatures live.
