Hi, I am a college graduate likely moving to Ft. Lauderdale for my first job in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. I know nothing about the area, but am primarily looking for tips on areas to live or hangout so I can meet other mid-twenties/college kids. Any specific young/fun areas to live in? Las Olas sounds great but expensive. Would like to keep it around around 700/month.

Any place near the beach but also walkable to E. Broward Blvd? Love to surf/sail.

Also is Ft. Lauderdale a particularly young town? Good nightlife or social activities.

Thanks!

rememeber to secure a job first....jobs (good ones) are scarce down here. Ft.Lauderdale is not called Ft.Liquordale for no reason. With that being said, yes...you will have a blast down here. Visit "America's backyard" in Downtown FT.Liquordale to have a blast.....best happy hour anywhere (that and Tarpon Bend). As for places to live...check Hollywood.

It will be impossible to find a decent place for $700. At best, $900/mo if you want to be east near the water. Anything downtown or near the water will be pricey. I would look further north in the Pompano Beach area to the east along US1. There is a lot of stuff there, restaurants, girls, etc. It is cheaper than downtown Fort Lauderdale. You can also consider Plantation, Davie, Sunrise, etc, but those areas are more boring.

Maybe check down by the 17th St Causeway? Just north of there are lots of apts, homes, duplexes where you might find something. It's a cheaper area for rent, close to downtown. Also, Victoria Park has some cute apartment areas, as well, and theyre affordable. They wont be luxurious, but its a great location. Craigslist is your friend, and perhaps www.newtimesbpb.com (New Times magazine) and the City Link magazine for ads..

Good luck!!

The 17th St. Causeway area is not cheap. It is less expensive than downtown, but not cheap at all. Anything within 1-mile of the ocean is pricey. The OP might be better off looking further west. You can get more apartment for your money out there. Still, I do not know anywhere that has decent $700 rents. Also consider than it is $700 + utilities, cable tv, and internet. Those extras can add up to $200 extra per month.
