“ A general hiring freeze is in place and employees are under pressure to make pay concessions, but Cape Coral's new city manager is asking for two consultants to help him analyze how efficiently the city is organized.

Gary King was hired he discussed making the city's organization more efficient.

King wants to hire two "organizational effectiveness" consultants for three months and pay them $30 to $40 an hour. No city benefits are involved.

Meanwhile, the City Council is saying city workers must help the city balance its budget and keep service levels intact by accepting wage and benefit concessions. The council has hired a labor attorney to help reduce personnel costs through labor negotiations.

" RealtyTrac, foreclosure filings in July dropped 10% from last year, but grew 4% from the previous month.

According to RealtyTrac, July's bank repossession or REO total was the second highest monthly total since it began tracking REO activity in April 2005.

In Florida, the year-over-year decline was about 9% with 51,557 or one in every 171 housing units, receiving a foreclosure notice. Sequentially filings edged up 0.01%.

All 10 metro areas with the nation's highest foreclosure rates in July posted year-over-year decreases in foreclosure activity, but five of the top 10 posted increases from the previous month. Foreclosure activity increased 21% sequentially in Cape Coral-Fort Myers.

• South Florida's economic output dropped 3.3 percent in the recession, the 83rd worst performance in the country but far better than Cape Coral's 15.1 % slide into 100th place.

• South Florida saw prices plunged 44 percent between 2007 and 2010, earning it the 93rd slot on the Brookings list for that measure. Two Florida regions fared worse: Bradenton, with a 46 % drop and Cape Coral with a 51 % drop. "

Planning is under way to beef up downtown with night-life options designed to redefine urban living."

Yoko: you know, if you really wanted to have some impact on the quality of Cape Coral government, I would suggest you take a keen interest in the various committees they have and see if you can attend them as an observer, and from that sniff out corruption and wastefulness.

One fearless person such as yourself can have a significant impact...I suspect most of these city goons are having a free for all with other peoples money. One set of eyes can shine light and make the roaches run for the exits. There will be one or two good guys in the bunch....figure out who those are and support them politically - get involved. Sitting on the sidelines and being the pacifist plays into their game.

" We're in debt up to our eyeballs and we have to grab a hold of the situation and slow down the spending," said Mayor Sullivan.

Ugh, I have posted something very similar behind this person and the only reaction you get is more quotes from online statistics. Excellent post btw! You can pout and complain about what has happened economically to an area all day long but it takes really insightful people to actually attempt to think of ways to help fix it. Attempting to scare people away from moving to an area is hardly going to promote it's economic growth.

"I bet Cape Coral is the only place on the planet that this is done," Mayor said referring to pension plans that were more than an employee's base salary.

With a pointer, Sullivan showed evidence of overtime pay in the tens of thousands and a pricey fire station he called the "Taj Mahal."

Freight rail and military bases are big ideas but a large chunk of Cape Coral isn't even hooked up to city water and sewer - something he admits needs work.

"I thought the meeting was excellent," said Dan X, who attended. "Cleared up a lot of past reasons of why we're here where we are today. It's a mess."

this union scam is to include overtime in pension calculations which leads to a practise of boosting overtime in the years counting to pension level - which can be just the last year worked if the scam is sweet enough. this is the sort of thing you get when absolutely no-one is paying attention - what a bunch of doorknob taxpayers.

yeah, in my home town up north the pro-business mayor started going after the unions and the unions counter attacked by making a formal complaint to the cops about unrelated political interference in his campaign - he was innocent in the end - but that got him on the defensive and union power continues unchallenged.

this Cape Coral guy sounds like a good guy in need of friends and help...at least you are not starting from scratch. Expect the unions to come after you though.

Its a sad day when city councils are more afraid of their unions than voters.

Because it is such a transient and apathetic area the politicians have a field day. It is a shame. They should be terrified of their constituents, but they are not.
