Sam, if you do feel adventurous, you could check the marine forecast and determine how the ride would be: Marine

twobums: what do you consider the best dining on Captiva and Sanibel? What about to view the sunset?
Have to chime in on my favorite subjects: sunsets and dining on Sanibel and Captiva!

Mucky Duck for sunset. Hands down. Always a good, fun crowd and awesome angle. We saw our first-ever green flash from there this July - I almost cried

As for dining, The Green Flash on Captiva is the greatest - great food, beautiful view of the sound, prices high but not prohibitive, yummy drinks.
Sanibel Steakhouse is awesome, but ain't cheap.
Doc Ford's on Sanibel has great food, reasonably priced and an awesome spot if you're a sports fan.
Lazy Flamingo (I prefer the one on Periwinkle Way on Sanibel, but the other is good too). Raw oysters, a grouper sandwich and beer in a frosted mug....my mouth is watering

I could go on and on, but those are the highlights! Can't wait to get back

Thanks, everyone, for such great ideas! We leave tomorrow and will be on the ground by 5:30 PM. Unfortunately, I received a request for proposal yesterday for which the response is going to eat onto my time there, but hopefully only a couple days. When it arrived in my email bin, I told everyone I was going to pull a Steve Slater!

its a bit of a hike, but consider Gasparilla Island - great museum at the lighthouse

which covers what all the shells are and regional history

- small charming shopping strip in Boca Grande.(its nicer than the photo indicates!)

is there a ferry there from Pine Island, or do you have to drive around?

Sam, since we have a rental car and love that 7 Mile Bridge drive, we decided we are going to drive down after all via the Everglades, stopping off in Everglades City as Hik suggested. So...the ferry will be on a future to-do list!

BTW - we ate at Ariel's last night per Yachtcare's rec. Lovely.

I hope I am not too late...

I love Everglades City because it is very much like Florida use to be.

I would suggest taking a boat tour from the national park. We enjoyed it and it was very informative.

Also, visit the Everglades City Rod and Gun Club. I have no idea what the food is like, but we stopped in and had a drink and the place is absolutely alive with history. It's so rare in that neck of the woods. Many past presidents, Ernest Hemingway and various celebrities have been there.

I hope you enjoy it. I thought the town was fascinating. By the way, the town has a VERY interesting past. There are not a lot of jobs there, and fishing was not too lucrative, back in the 80s, so the local folks had to get creative. The problem is they were a bit too creative. It was discovered that a major portion of the town was having regular shipments of pot brought in, by boat. Most of its residents ended up in legal trouble. True!

Anyway, they call Everglades City Florida's last frontier. I love the place!

Not too late, Hik. We are enjoying the house and the area, and just relaxing before heading south tomorrow. I'd read about that boat tour and the pot bust. It really should be a movie! We'll be checking it out for sure. I'm old enough to remember "Gentle Ben" (gack!) and so have always had a vision of the Everglades that I'm looking forward to experiencing.

One thing I've noticed is how friendly folks are around here. They seem to go out of their way to be nice. Great to see, especially after all the grousing one hears here. I'm reminded of perspective. When we traveled to Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, we were amazed that the glorious scenery seemed to be invisible to the locals. I know I take for granted the beautiful mountains and simplicity of pastoral life in rural PA. It's the same thing all over - geographical blindness strikes us all.

Loving SWFL and Cape Coral....
