"These guys are using your money to keep your voice, and your vote, out of the neighborhood planning process. Think about that when you're standing in the voting booth on Nov 2.

Pulte Homes accepted $800 million in federal bailout refunds while kicking in $567,000 to a political action committee opposed to Amendment 4. "

This cynical charade has been going on since the beginning of statehood. It's the reason so many Florida cities look like they were planned by chimpanzees on LSD.

Excellent piece. I love Carl Hiaasen.

This would be so good for a place like Cape Coral where there is a tsunami of available housing/commercial spaces which is washing away not only its own but also the livelihood of the state of Florida.

" Lowball prices by the banks were almost impossible to match until recently, he said. “A bank can write off $100,000 from the price of the house. You and I can’t do that,” he said. "

" In September, 62% of all 1,340 sales were in those categories. "

Because a council member has a special "friend" in construction business and/or is related to construction "consultancy" it should not mean that Cape Coral and its neighboring cities should suffer because of too much unnecessary construction.

Stop them by voting for Amendment 4 !

This issue with the foreclosures is going to be a very interesting development to watch. This is one area where the federal gov't is going to have to step in and mandate rules. Right now you could have someone go to one court house and the court will rule in favor of the homeowner and another will rule in favor of the bank.

It comes down to this the homeowner borrows 200k and makes no payments for 12 months. There is an entity that purchases the rights to collect the debt and has some documentation proving it. When not being paid they try to take the collateral for the loan. They bring it to court show what evidence they have and the court rules in their favor. They resell the property, later to find that they never recorded the documentation showing they were they entitled to seize the property.

One judge could easily say the new owner doesn't own the house because it was sold to them by someone that didn't own the house (the lender). Another judge could easily say The lender had the right but just didn't record properly and allow them to do corrected titles and deeds due to errors and ommission by recording assignments of mortgage. Or a judge could easily say it was already decided in court case closed.
