Hi! I'm moving from Kentucky to the Ft. Myers/Naples area. Leaving here on Labor Day and can't wait to get there.

I'm looking for a place to rent and from what I've seen so far, it looks like rents are all over the place down there. I'm not really looking for one of those "vanilla" apartments, though.

Here in Kentucky, I am renting a cottage, one room plus bath and kitchen, with a nice yard/patio area. I also have a 28 pound 4 year old jack russel terrier who is totally house broken.

All the ads I see are for those big apartment complexes. Can anyone suggest a place I can look to see rental properties that are listed by private owners? I'd kind of like to have a place lined up before I leave here since I'll be bringing my dog with me. (By the way, it's just me and the dog and we like small places with open spaces.)

You may want to check out their local newspaper. The local online papers often have ads with rentals that aren't on the larger sites. Also, you may want to check out FRBO~For Rent By Owner. Good luck to you in your move to Fla.

I live in Naples, and have played the renting game for the past year and a half-2 years. Most of it is condos/complexes, and some don't even take dogs, while most you will have to pay a special fee and a deposit as well. What you have to do is look in the newspaper classified section. They will categorize the types of rentals. If you want a yard, don't even look at the "condos for rent". You will most likely want to look at the "houses for rent". I don't know what housing rent prices are in Kentucky, but I have a feeling that what you see you are going to get for prices will probably be too little for too much.
