For a large list of things to do in the area please read the sticky at the front of the Fort Myers forum. Thanks.

Here's a link to a thread I started over the summer:

//www.city-data.com/forum/fort-...bel-cheap.html

My personal fav things to do are:

*bike the island ~ free!
*hang out at the fishing pier to see what peeps are catching ~ free!
*watch the kite boarders @ the causeway or lighthouse beach ~ free!
*be a beachcomber for treasures other than shells i.e. driftwood, starfish,
champagne corks, fishing lures & bobbers etc ~ free!!
*chat w/locals ~ free!
*boat out to Upper Captiva, Picnic Island & esp. Cayo Costa
* fish the skinny waters
*kayak from just about anywhere ~free!
*catch the sunset from either causeway or Blind Pass ~ spectacular!

Boating on a friend's boat is wayyyyy cheaper than owning one.
Just one local's perspective!!

Was just there for my honeymoon and also was born/raised out there...

A few suggestions:

Biking - Billy's rentals ; also mopeds are a decent option if feeling a bit adventurous. You can take them all over the island, causeway, and out to Captiva.

Casa Ybel and Sundial have decent poolside bars if looking for beach drinks. It's a cheaper option to bring your own to the beach in a cooler.

The Sanibel Thriller - nice tour around the islands + the wake in the morning attracts many jumping dolphins

Breakfast @ the Lighthouse Cafe = a must... We love everything there especially the Key West style Benedict and Pecan French Toast...

Ice Cream at Pinnochio's (same plaza as Lighthouse) is also excellent as well!

Dinner at Mucky Duck at Sunset (Gulf side) and Green Flash (Bay Side) are both solid options on Captiva.

The camp site on Periwinke (just down/across from Dairy Queen) has a mini zoo (Tropical birds, lemurs, etc..)

Ding Darling and Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation are excellent nature & bird watching locations.
