I would only bother with a canal or lake if you had a boat to go along with it. Cape Coral is a boaters and fishing paradise, they have some golf courses, a decent waterpark, a small riverside beach (which they do as good of a job as you can with), a couple of nature parks (four mile cove and rotary park), as well and some good resturaunts. Other than that it is mostly a "bedroom community" I find I'm usually leaving Cape Coral to go to Sanibel, siesta key, fort myers beach, cayo costa, cabbage key, matlacha, miromar or coconut point outlets. So if you weren't looking to go boating or fishing I would recommend vacationing on sanibel or ft myers beach or venice.

There is a place in Port Charlotte which is not too far from Englewood Beach and downtown Port Charlotte. It is convenient to shopping, dining, entertainment, and beaches. It is called Waterway Villas and is located on a canal.
www.rentmeflorida.com has a vacation rental listed in there. It is a 2 bedroom and 1 bath furnished rental. The community has a pool and clubhouse and is a very small area within a culdesac road. The clubhouse has a fireplace, BBQ, heated pool, pool table, and laundry facilities. It is also within walking distance to El Jobean Park and the Fishing Pier along the El Jobean bridge.
