I just noticed while driving in Cape Coral, that there is a huge Confederate flag on the corner of Santa Barbara and Veterans. Anybody know what that's all about?

Might be a Confederate cemetery.

"As a first step toward a Confederate Kentucky, 60 secessionists from 32 counties met in Russellville on October 29th. Presided over by pro-Confederate U.S. Rep. Henry Burnett of Cadiz, the attendees scheduled a secession convention for November 18th. "

I don't see how you can be surprised at finding the flag in a former confederate state.

Except that there are more Yankees living here than Southerners.

My 11-year-old daughter tells me all the time that she's a Southerner. I tell her she was born into a Yankee bastion - Naples - and raised by Yankee parents. Of course she's been raised in a true Southern state for over six years so she can probably claim dual citizenship.

But seriously, Fort Myers was the only federally occupied fort in South Florida. It was used as a refuge for escaped slaves and Union sympathizers. Haven't any of you been downtown and seen the breathtaking mural on the side of the federal courthouse of the 2nd United States Colored Infantry? The first time I saw it, it took my breath away.

When I first moved to Orlando from Massachusetts I was surprised by how Southern the area was. That's where I first heard southern accents and discovered the joys of sweet tea. When I moved further south to Fort Myers that all disappeared. I didn't hear another southern accent until I moved north to Knoxville, Tennessee.
