I am a 50/50 resident with legal residency in Michigan. I want to leave a car in Ft Myers permanetly; my Michigan insurance company is not licensed to do business in Florida. From my searches it appears that I cannot license a vehicle in Florida even though I own property without becoming a resident?

I would prefer to have Florida insurance and license plates to be in full compliance. I don't want to give up my homestead rights in Mich that far exceed potential homestead savings in Ft Myers, though our loose canon Michigan governor is gutting state services and taxing retirees to give business a free ride.

You can get dual residency. When you get a license in Florida, you do not have to forfeit your Michigan license. After that you can simply register your car here, people do it all the time.

Dual licenses have been gone for a long time. I used to have one many years ago. It makes controlling homesteading very easy for the state.

to register your vehicle you do need to get florida insurance and bring the vehicle to registry so they can read the vin off the vehicle. the insurance is typically higher than most states.

I just got my Florida license after living in Florida for the better part of 30 years and still have my Connecticut license too. They looked at it for proof if ID and handed it right back to me.

You can bring your vehicle to a dealer in your home state to fill out a vin# verification form so you don't have to bring in your vehicle.

Doesn't mean it happened, they didn't take it. Same thing happened to my brother and his wife.
