I have already searched and have not seen anything recent. I am moving to Cape Coral next week, and I am trying to find fast internet. I had cable internet before running at 12 MBps down and 2 up. I moved from that, and into an area that only has Centurylink 1.5MBps down, 256 kbps up. And it is PAINFULLY slow. Speedtests show that I am getting what I should, but I have a household that uses it as well, and of course it chips away to where I have to cut off wireless, so that I can enjoy a round of battlefield 3.

I have been reading a lot of wretched reviews on Comcast, some on Centurylink (which I am not fond of anyways.) and the highest speed available from Centurylink is 3 up 768 down, which truthfully I do not know how much of a difference that is going to be from what I have now.

I also download large files, and really don't want to spend more than I have to. TV isn't that important, and we have cell phones. Not wanting to spend an arm and leg either. I pay $65 for what I have now which makes me really mad since I was only supposed to be paying $35, but CL is not honoring their original agreement.

Any thoughts?

You didn't search very hard, because there was a huge debate that lasted days on this very topic only like a month ago. Try searching for Comcast, it's there trust me.

No, no, read that one too. Was some good information and a lot of flaming.

I am also trying to get a realistic idea of what my bill will look like.

Comcast just quoted me 29.99 ($37 with modem) for 6 months

$45.99 for the 6 months after that

and last but not least 62.99 after the first year. These last 2 without modem leasing btw.

Add another 34.99 for activation, and I found that my new address shows and I quote "No serviceable, nothing to worry though, what I would like to do for you at this time is to submit a serviceability form, in this way our specialists can find out whether or not your address can have Comcast services, after this we will call you back within 3-5 days, is that fine for you?"

Centurylink was unavailable for questioning.

Here in MO they hit us with a lot of taxes and fees that add on too the bill about another $15.

So assuming that both are available, who has the faster service? And what would my bill look like with Comcast?

Though something I just realized, was that my address pulled up on their website, which from my experience when it does not, it generally means that it is not available. But I won't hold my breath, just an observation.

They both have many different speeds and services to choose from. The prices are comparable. The customer service is not. Like I said read that other thread for that. Comcast is gonna run you about $37 a month for the first 6 months. Century link is more like $45, but doesn't increase after the introductory period. So in the long run, Centurylink is cheaper. Speeds are very close, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Even with the max Centurylink is offering of 3 up, 768 down? That does'nt seem right?

Good luck with your search. I had CL in our rental at the slowest speed and it was fine. When we moved we bundled with comcast and got a higher speed(supposedly) well it was horrible. After going back and forth with the company, I cancelled CC and went back to CL. BUT recently with CL I called to change my addy and they made this great offer for bundling(well it was at the same time I had been complaining to CC about our cable which was horrible and they kept sending tech after tech with no resolution) so I took the bait and switched TV to CL too. Hated it and switched back to CC (as did my neighbor) so long story short. Neither one is perfect, I have issues with both, but I have come to terms with it and have CC for cable, and CL for internet and phone because this is what works in our older home with older lines coming to our home. It may be different where you are you may just have to commit to one and try it out and then switch if you hate it within the 30 period.

** both are a challenge to deal with and get anyone on the phone once you are an actual customer. Its very easy to sign up for service but if you have problems or what to cancel, forget it. I spent 2 hours with CL trying to solve and issue with my service!

Once it was finally installed (which was a negative experience) I have never had a problem with Comcast in Cape Coral, and I am a consultant who requires a fast and reliable internet connection for my home office or else I'd be out of business. Whenever I've had to call, I call the local number ((239) 432-9277) and always manage to speak with a tech who has generally been helpful, offering me unsolicited discounts to my current plan and credits when something didn't go quite right.

I never understand the negativity, but I don't use them for anything else other than internet.

Awesome. Thanks for the responses. I am thinking I will give CC a shot first and do the 30day eval. If it is even available to me of course. Finally got ahold of CL and they are showing 10 down and (maybe) 1.5 up at my new residence.

I am getting speeds well over 1.5 in Cape Coral. Some smaller files are in the 3-4 mbps range with Centurylink

I think the debate is moot. I worked for Comcast and if they are putting a serviceability order in you are pretty much screwed. Unless you have big money to give them to wire you up, forget it. I could be wrong. If it is a new house and you are the number that tips them in favor of wiring the neighborhood then you are in luck (although don't expect this to happen, say, next week). It's huge money to get the service to you and then you may back out, or even if you don't it will be awhile before they break even.

You already know what I think about CL as opposed to Comcast. CL is slower than molasses compared to Comcast. But it depends what you use it for. Some people have to have the high speeds, others not so much.

Your other possibility is to get service through you cellphone company. I had that through Sprint one time and loved it! It usually runs about $50 a month. Now, you can even get it through Pay-As-You-Go outfits like Virgin Mobile!
