As far as the US-17 Freeway, it's obviously the numbering patterns are irrelevant these days (cases in point: I-99 in PA/NY is located between I-79 and I-81, and there's a proposal for an Interstate 3 in Eastern GA between Savannah and Augusta), so it could easily be I-67, or maybe even an Interstate with two non-connecting segments (just like I-86 in Idaho and NY and I-84 in OR/ID/UT and NY/CT/MA).
I think the number is the least of the problems. In fact 1-75 runs north and sound like other odd numbered roads but also runs east to west thru alligator alley.

Really need a freeway from east to west, along 70 or 80. Little 2 lane roads are absolutely buried in traffic now.

They are forecasting a 20% growth in a short time. What we really need is something more than tourism for business growth down here.

There's no room for anything here other than what you're already seeing......

Corporate headquarters office complexes (i.e. Hertz), and tourism trade.

Since Miami/Lauderdale is already jammed up with the same, we may start getting some of the overflow.
Opening up of Cuba to tourism might be a great opportunity to make this area a "jumping off" point for that trade. The Key West ferry people are probably already salivating at the thought.......

Key West ferry has already applied for a permit to do the Cuba run. Down to KW, then down to Cuba, then back up.

Agreed on the need for freeways. "I-475" has been my nickname for the Colonial Blvd / Veterans Pkwy route for years now.

I believe Fort Myers and West Palm Beach are the largest metros left in the United States not served by any local expressways, or more than one interstate. (WPB has the Turnpike though.)

One still has to follow the rules for Cuba engagement...either journalism, or family, or medical reasons will get you in, along with a host of other categories. The airline's website has that disclaimer.
