Hi! My family and I are thinking about relocating to SWF. I currently live in Michigan, but as a child lived in Lehigh. I moved from Lehigh 15 years ago with my parents. I now have my own family and am ready to come back home. I have a few questions about the surrounding areas, what they are like and what is available as far as employment because I was just a child when we left. I know North Fort Myers and Lehigh are overrun with gangs now and have high crime rates, so I want to stay away from all of that. I live 1/2 mile from Detroit and if I have to deal with trashy, ignorant criminals, I might as well stay here.

My husband is looking into CC, I was thinking about Clearwater or New Port Richey. Where are the better areas?

I have two small children, so I need to find somewhere that has good schools and a safe place for my babies to grow. What are the best choices for schools?

I work as a nurses assistant and my husband is a high end finished carpenter, which is why he wants to be where there are higher end areas to work in. The job he currently has now, he can keep because it is all travel when we leave, but I would like him to find a job close to home because it'll be less stressful on myself and the children being in a new place, with no family or friends. Are there any areas that are a little less difficult to find carpentry and nursing home employment?

Finally, does anyone have any suggestions for me regarding anything else? I have always been within 5 miles of my parents and grandmother, so uprooting and moving is a little nerve racking. I have never made this big of a move and I am sure everything isn't going to go smoothly. I would appreciate any suggestions for insight that anyone has. Thanks so much!

Hi Jays Mom, I did relocate to SW Florida myself and it was an even bigger move than the one you are planing. I moved here from Germany and most of my family is still in Germany. We moved here with two small children. When we were planing the move, we travelled Florida - landed in Orlando and travelled down the East Coast over Key west and then up the West coast. We ended up in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area and liked it here best. We live in North fort Myers because we like the more rural living but I work in Cape Coral - and I like both. North Fort Myers and Cape Coral. You as a Nurse and your husband as a carpenter should not have any problems to find a job down here in our area. I feel save here - in North Fort Myers as well as in Cape Coral and I don't see anything about Gang activities at all. Actually most neighborhoods in North Fort Myers are very well with neighborhood watch and one is looking out for the other.

I suggest either having jobs lined up or coming here with plenty of money to last until you can find work. Investigate the job situation before moving. Other than that Cape Coral is a great place to live.

The original poster should think twice before trashing other peoples homes and neighborhoods. I know that N. Ft Myers has many really nice communities that she would be lucky to live in. Leigh Acres gets a bad rap.....most of the negative stuff you read has a lot to do with racism and bad investments.

Hopefully if she does move here.....she will leave her attitude back north..... I would suggest that you make a contribution to what ever community you move to and from that base you may be in a position to NEGATIVELY categorize other peoples homes...but that maybe is very provisional. Good Luck. Try to be an asset to your community.

I don't live in N Ft Myers.....I live on the other side of town......I just don't like seeing people "trash" other peoples neighborhoods. IMO, Other than make them feel superior....it does nothing constructive.

I don't think she was out of line.....it is what it is and,as she said, she grew up in Lehigh so it's not like she was speaking without some first hand knowledge.
Half of the posts on this forum are trashing someones neighborhood.
I don't like it when people trash CC but anyone is free to post a rebuttal

to everyone who trashes NorthFort Myers - have you ever been there? Have you ever been in the Moody River Community, in the River bend Community, at Buttomwood or Overriver Drive? Have you ever been in Waterway Estates or Gulf Acres? Have you ever been on and off SR 31, Slater Road, Nalle Grade,.. and looked at the ranches and little and big farms? Have you ever been in North Fort Myers where you can still experience nature and where neighborhoods are still neighborhoods?

I live in North Fort Myers since 1990 and would never live somewhere else. I work in Cape Coral and I also like Cape Coral a lot. However I like big lots and lots of natur. My 3 German Shepherds need room to run and my husband needs a lot of garage space for his oldtimers Lehigh I don't know to well - however I know that there are very nice neighborhoods in Lehigh as well.
