Hello all,
I am now in New York but looking to move in the summer. We're currently in contract for a foreclosed home in Cape Coral, and trying to find affordable home insurance. I am a 1st time home buyer and unsure what I should choose for deductibles, ins amounts etc;. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. It is a 1977 home and not in a flood zone.
Thank you,
Ruthie

I just went through this a couple of weeks ago. I will close on a home in SW Fort Myers in 2 weeks. I got several quotes. Since I use Allstate on my house in NY, Long Island, I called the Allstate office in FT Myers. Allstate doesn't insure homes in FL but the agent did get me a quote from Safe Harbor Insurance Co. I checked with my NY agent and she told me Allstate in FL would only recomment AAA+ insurance companies.I compared the Safe HArbor quote with several others and decided to go with them. My house in FT Myeres was built in 1987 and has a pool. My NY agent looked the quote over and said it looked very good. Cost was about $2000/yr. I got a couple of discounts on the wind mitigation report.
I got the best policy they offered on this house.

Your dwelling coverage should cover the rebuilding of your home if it is a total loss. Hurricanes are not the only cause for a total loss. Fire can cause your home to be totaled and uninhabitable. I'd rather be over-insurerd, than under-insured. Choosing a higher deductible may lower your premium. Most deductibles are either $1000 or $2500. Hurricane Deductible is always 2% of the dwelling amount. So if your dwelling is insured for $300K, your Hurricane deductible will be 6K.
