We went to Cape Coral twice and Sanibel once on our last vacation. Rental company forwarded the charges for tolls to us. Of the $10.00 in tolls, PlatePass added $17.85 in Admin Fees. I can't find anywhere that it is explained that they will do that !!
It's your rental car company's PlatePass thing ripping you off. Admin fees for vehicles have been waived because of the non-attended toll plazas and were never that high. I think it used to like $3 before they closed the attended plazas. If you check your rental agreement and/or the rental car company's website regarding tolls, that is where it is explained where they will add that additional $5.95 admin fee you're referring to.

If someone rents a car and plans to make a lot of trips over any of the 3 toll bridges, they should probably stop in at a Publix or any location where SunPass transponders are sold and spend $20 to buy the removable transponder. If you are using your own car, a $5 mini pass can be permanently added to your windshield. Find out more at https://www.sunpass.com/en/about/sun...sponders.shtml.

True, plus some rental car companies included unlimited tolls and bill you per day. Comes in Handy when taking the turnpike from Miami to Orlando!

I saw the rental companies recently started this. I know Avis offers it now. I think it is $9.95/day but your mileage may vary based on rental company and location of rental.

From the last I heard, Hertz bills admin charges for just the days you use the in-rental transponder. Most other companies charge a $4.00-$7.00 a day charge for the length of the rental, up to usually about $25-$30 a month, even if you only use the in-rental transponder once. As always, read the fine print and if unsure, ask for information in writing at the rental car station of pick up.

So one $3.00 toll on a seven day rental could be a total charge of close to $30 sent as a separate bill from the rental company's toll administrator (rarely run through the rental car operation itself - it is contracted out to another company). So even if you call, for example, Alamo or Hertz or Fox, etc. they will say call this other company to complain. And you likely won't get any reimbursement as the policy is outlined in the contract, likely in the small print.

Good point on the removeable SunPass. Just make sure you update the plate and info associated with it if you use it again with another rental car at a later time. And make sure the flap for the in rental transponder is CLOSED!
