Greetings everyone! I am a recently-retired teacher, currently living in Missouri, with two young (adopted) children, who would very much like to move (retire?) to Southwest, West or Northwest (Gulf Coast) Florida. I would prefer to live in an affordable neighborhood or "village" with like-minded progressive, eco-oriented, pro-environmental protection, academically-inclined folks---one with a good to great public school system for my children, and preferably an area with bike paths, hiking paths, clean air, clean water, places to swim, at or fairly close to the beach, etc. Is anyone aware of places that might fit that description that are open to new "members" or neighbors? Does such a place exist? Thanks a million for any help you may be able to offer!!!

Sounds like a dream but I believe the Utopia you describe does not exist down here or maybe anywhere.
Good luck, sounds nice if you can find it......

SW FL is pretty diverse. If you want a community filled with "like-minded" people, you won't find it here. ... Possibly one of the planned communities would partially fit what you're looking for. It sounds like you are looking for something with lots of rules,, and something planned out (bike paths, etc.). Planned or gated communities are the closest to thing to that. Most SW FL'ers, are not big on rules, conformity, and like-mindedness. It's the wild, wild diverse southwest here.

The prison on Ortiz Ave might be a thought.
There is diversity
Only guards have guns
All services are free

If you are looking for acadademically superiority then you don't want your children going to any of the public schools in Florida. You didn't do your homework on that one.

Not much diversity on the west coast of Florida. Try the east near Fort Lauderdale.....

Progressive types love communities that have diversity so long as the people in the community are just like them. But the reality that a lot of the people in those multi-cultural communities don't like these progressives. I have lived in such communities and that is the sad reality of life.

"Progressive types love communities that have diversity so long as the people in the community are just like them".
Sounds a bit hypocritical, guess it all adds up though.......
