I'm currently in Sanibel and the water is not the color I remember in Clearwater a few years ago. It is a bit brownish yet still has a green tint, but is not at all clear. Very murky. Locals have told us it's due to draining Lake Okeechobee and have given us some background on that - which I think is very sad because I hate to see the ocean environment suffer - but I also suspect the Gulf may be churned up from this storm just north of us that's been hovering around Tampa and bringing some heavy rains down here to Sanibel.

Anyone know if the water is better closer to Captiva? We are currently on the southern end of the island, where it hooks furthest south, and I'm wondering if we're too close to drainage points.

I hope FL can fix this draining and pollution issue with the lake. Seems the current solution is not feasible at all and is only more damaging.

Yes, Captiva would be clearer than Sanibel, as Captiva is farther from the mouth of the Caloosahachee.

The water near Big Hickory Island in Estero was aqua blue yesterday - finally. Today, the water at Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs wasn't as nice but it wasn't brown - more of a greenish tan color. Maybe the Lake O discharge has finally worked its way out of the area?

Flew in today and from the air you could see random large blotches of brown water. The biggest one was right at the causeway to Sanibel. I hope it is breaking up and dissipating. There was certainly more blue than brown, but a lot of brown nonetheless.

Big Hickory Island in Estero on Sunday was brown near the shore with blue patches further out - too far out to swim to though. Friday at Barefoot beach the water was a little murky around noon but cleared up to shades of aqua later on in the afternoon.

Flew in today around 9 am. The water from up there looked murky - no shades of blue to be seen from Ft Myers to Bonita Springs.............

Water update today - brown water from Barefoot Beach south to the north side of Wiggins Pass. It may extend further south along Wiggins Pass, but I only kayaked along the northern part. The snowbirds are going to be disappointed at the water quality. I'd say, from my experiences, 75% of the time I go to the beach (from Lover's Key to Wiggins Pass), the water is brown.........

In years past where there has been brown water, how long did it take to clear up?
