Thought so. Not gonna happen though. The word is out up here in the North. For me it's not so much that FL is such a great place as much as it's up here in NY it sucks to retire. My taxes are almost $14K verses $3K for my recently acquired home in SW FT Myers. That alone is reason enough to move. Plus the winter sucks hugely up here. Summer is 8 - 12 weeks at best. The rest of the year is cold and dark. Government corruption you say, we wrote the book on it up here. And pensions, teachers, cops, civil service, etc, all collecting $70 - $300K/year on my dime
I have 3 years to go and can't wait to join you all

lol. And how many of those that are unhappy with the recent influx of people are natives? It reminds me of one of my favorite Yakov Smirnoff jokes about when he got to America:

"After taking the oath, I looked around at the smiling faces of all the immigrants near me, and only one thought came to mind: 'I hate those goddamn foreigners who come over here and take our jobs!' "

That's another issue. With the homestead you are locked into a 3% yearly increase in the assessed value of the home. This doesn't mean your taxes can't increase by more than 3%. If you read the fine print the county/city reserves the right to reassess at any time. It also doesn't guarantee there won't be a mill rate increase. Unfortunately for you, I'm assuming you don't have homestead since you aren't a permanent resident, you might be in for quite a shock if you're only paying $1200 now. My neighbor isn't homesteaded and his taxes in the last 3 years went from $1300 in 2013 to $2600+ in 2014 last year they were $4200. They literally just knocked on his door in the summer of 2014 to reassess his house. They did it to everyone in the neighborhood that wasn't
homesteaded. They will nail you any time you buy, sell or refi as well.
