We have gotten estimates on putting thin pavers over our cement deck surrounding our pool in our lanai area. One definite question has come up in the installation process. Some recommend setting them in sand only while others recommend mortar being used for more stabilization. Two of the contractors offer the same product line with different installation processes. Have any of you had experience that could help us? Thanking you in advance - we are scratching our heads.

I would set them in some type of mortar. Straight sand will shift, and with our 50" rainfall levels should tend to wash under the tiles. There is a sand/mortar mix that hardens like mortar, and this may be what they are suggesting.

Ours and our neighbors are all set in mortar. No issues here and no sand in the pool either!

We had thin pavers laid directly on our concrete lanai and then sand swept into the joints. 4 years no problems. The outside perimeter ones were set on mortar.

Can anyone in the thread recommend a particular company they were happy with? Also, any pricing details would be great. Trying to decide what to do with our worn out concrete lanai.
Thanks.

Sun Dog, what did you do to prep the original surface? Did you have to level (mud) or put down some kind of base, sand?

I don't know. We bought it already done. Another neighbor just did his. He had a concrete slab poured and then mortared the pavers on top of it.
