We live in the NW Cape. Swale drainage has always been an issue, standing water for most of the summer and boggy conditions year round. A year or so ago, the city attempted to fix the problem, regrading all of the local swales, even on unimproved lots. Didn't seem to help much. I no longer have a small pond in my yard but there is still a swamp. My neighbor and I opened a very small trench to the storm drain that is located at the edge of my property. That localizes the problem somewhat but there is always standing water in the trench. The lip of the storm drain is above the level of the water in the trench so that is surely part of the problem, the water can't fully drain into the storm drain.

I'm looking for options or advice from those who have been there, done that. Can I hire a contractor to regrade the swale (or maybe lay drain pipe) and open the storm drain enough to allow water to enter it? If so, any recommendations for a reputable contractor? I tried the CC Citizen Support Center but they haven't yet returned my call or email.

Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is to raise Cape Coral higher than two feet above sea level and stop it from raining here. I doubt anything else will be very effective.

Swales in the areas near canals drain directly into the canals. There is no problem. I suppose you could install a dry well for your swale to drain into.

As I understand the problem, each property is built on by different contractors. They put in a swale but do not have a standardized direction of flow. The water is not sloped to a certain point. I have seen one persons run off all run to one neighbor, so there is always standing water.
Also, there are many lots that have not been built on and there is no water control on those lots.
I have not seen many storm drains in Cape Coral.
