Hello! I've been offered a new job at a small company and am strongly considering it. I'm 31, single and gay. To be honest, I'm a bit worried I'll be somewhat of an "odd one out" in the area as it seems like a place with a lot of retirees and married couples with kids. Is there much of a "singles scene?" I've never been to the area and just trying to figure out if it'd be a good fit socially.

You should be fine - there are a lot of singles and a decent amount of nightlife. Check out http://prideswfl.com/

Fort Myers has a gay bar on 41, otherwise you have to drive across 75 for 2 hours to get to Fort Lauderdale for more gay areas and culture.

Be careful on accepting any job here without some type of contract. A common practice with small business owners here - get you down here, then cut your pay. Have seen this with many friends and colleagues that relocate.

You are correct - there is not much of a singles scene. The area was just mentioned in one of the worst places for singles. The median age here is 42 (or close) the retirees (snowbirds) are just more obvious (slow driving, camping at restaurants etc.). Tons of college students around the FGCU area.

Ft Meyers is not an entertainment hot spot--gay or straight. The east coast of Florida, is a younger and perhaps has a more hip population. We do have a gay community and Ft Myers is very accepting.....my partner and I have not experienced any problems with discrimination.....but we are an older and a quiet couple. Naples might have more going on. Before you move you really owe it to yourself to come down and check it out.

My uncle and cousin have lived in Ft Myers for over a decade. They are both gay. Not sure if there is an active singles/gay scene but they really love it there.

I have a gay son and he has no problems here. You should have seen the turnout for the Memorial Service for the Pulse Nightclub shooting downtown. It was amazing.
