If you HAVE to move to Florida, I would pick Sarasota or St. Petersburg. Do NOT move to Bradenton, horrible area. The only okay area of Bradenton is Lakewood ranch which is near Sarasota anyhow. School system is HORRIBLE. Bradenton crime is bad. Sarasota has a lot of crime as well. But try to stay EAST of the interstate.

My husband and I are white and live in Naples which is south of Ft. Myers. We came from NY about 5 years ago. We have grown children who still live in NY, two who are bi-racial (black/white). They visit us down here and I often feel badly that they are the only black faces in a sea of whiteness wherever we go except to Walmart! I'm extremely glad we never moved to Naples with them when they were young.

As for your dogs, you do see dogs everywhere here. But, 98% of them are tiny ones and they're all on a leash. They are NOT allowed at the beach ever. And, must be leashed anywhere else in Naples except for at one small, dog park, where you will have to give them a bath when you get home, because it's so dusty there. You can bring them to town and even bring them to many outdoor restaurants while you eat. They must, of course be well behaved, however, for that.

We recently had a community meeting in our gated community. (Don't get me started on gated communities with HOAs!!!) The main topic among the over 200 people there was dog poop! Even the director was laughing about it.

Coming from LI, NY, South Florida has been culture shock for me! And, I'm hoping to get out of here quickly!!!
