So, my wife and I are planning on moving to the Ft. Myers area from Memphis, TN in the next couple of months. We are in our late 20's early 30's. I'll be working for one of the local television stations.
My question(s) is this, Is Ft. Myers a cool place? Does it have any history or is it all pop-up strip malls? Are there any hip parts of town? A place where you can walk to dine and drink(without getting robbed)? Coming from Memphis, I really don't think crime would compare. Is there an arts district? Does the area have a community feel to it? What kind of nightlife is there? Any help would be appreciated. We are definitely going to make this move, I just need some info on parts of town that I can start looking for places(house rental would be nice).
Thanks in advance!
Dan

I don't know if I would call Fort Myers "cool" but there is some history here and some cool places. Downtown Fort Myers is a cool place to walk around, shop, dine, have a drink and so on. It's beutiful!
It is bordered by a less desirable area, and I'm sure some will try to scare you away by telling you that a police officer was shot there (it's true), but my wife and I have never felt unsafe there.
IMO Mcgregor blvd is the hip area.
Good luck in your move.
My family is very happy here.

Just stay away from Martin Luther King blvd by all means, that is the area you do not want to venture. Or Dunbar area. McGregor is a great road from end to end.

You should visit the area or rent before you buy a home.

Where does the downtown area turn into the bad area? Is Centenniel Park dangerous to walk around or is it fine?

Lee County is probably one of the most boring places in Florida.
