I would go for renting a house because I enjoy my privacy and do not wish to hear others noise. One downfall, the landlord may want you to care for the lawn.. otherwise everything should be the same..

I'd agree with helpless, For the price point you mentioned, I know folks renting 3/2/2 on direct access canal with a pool right now. Get an additional roomie, and invest in a used push lawn mower, spend a few extra bucks(offset by the extra roommate) get a pool service, and live the good life! Good luck!

One of the problems with renting a house which was touched on, is that you normally have some maintenance / lawn care requirement expectations. The other is that you need to be careful, because so many people are delinquent in their house payments, you may get into a complicated foreclosure mess that you don't anticipate, and you are normally dealing with someone that is not a professional property management firm. They often know as little as anyone about renters rights, or landlord responsibilities.

I would go with renting a house. Sure you have lawn maintenance and utilities will be a little higher than an apartment, but the privacy and freedom is so worth it!
