I am just wondering if Lee County is a particularly racist area.

Would you consider Lee County welcoming for someone black relocating? Is Ft Meyers less racist than the balance of the county?

Or is there not an overall problem. thanks.

I lived in Hendry and Glades Counties that border Lee.

You will be absolutley fine in Lee County. Ft. Myers is probably one of the most beautiful towns in Florida that I lived in. Seriously.

Wow. Really? What about elected officials? I am beginning to think I must have heard the stories on CNN and the major networks incorrectly (regarding the McCain rally and what happened). Maybe it wasn't Lee County.

Anyway, it really had me scared. I must be confused about where in Florida it all took place or maybe my interpretation of the events I saw on TV is just wrong.

I was in a hurray after all!

OK. Now I am sure it is Lee County.

If you go to google and type in Racism Lee County Florida
you will find pages of stuff that happened just this week alone. (don't put it in quotations or nothing comes up I found).

It depends what publication it is and if it is legitimate. I have never seen a problem there and I just moved from there last week. I never heard it in the news there either. Actually all the time in Florida after 14 years I can recall two incidents in Florida. I can think of one in Orlando where some 14 year olds were spray painting racial slurs on a familys home and set thier mailbox on fire. The other was some teens again spray painting nazi crap on a jewish families home or a temple in Tampa I believe, this we like 10 years ago. Nothing ever like this in Lee County. Not that it has not happened, but Fox4 news never had anything like that in thier news.

We are talking here about the Sheriff of Lee County and his statements introducing a Sarah Palin rally: he said certain words and then did a "salute". I am not saying he is a racist because I don't know him. However, his behavior isn't the norm in most parts of the country.

Is this typical behavior of most elected officials in Lee County? How long has this sheriff been in power there? It seems it says something about the people who elected him doesn't it.

Your post sparked my interest, so I did a google search on Lee county and Palin, and as you said, many hits came up. I read many of them.

I do not want to get into a big political debate here or anything, but is it fair to yourself and Lee county to judge the whole county perhaps negatively because the Sheriff used Senator Obama's legal middle name at a republican rally?

I could easily think of much more repugnant forms of "racism".

I am by no means trying to start a hub-bub here......I just think that there may be better ways of measuring how good a place is to live then this incident.

I suggest you may want to pull up a video of the event on youtube perhaps.
