Hey everyone, I will be starting a new job as the music director for the Florida Repertory Theatre in the Fort Myers River District (zipcode 33901) in a few months. I have NEVER been to Fort Myers (I'm relocating from the western Chicagoland area), but I have been reading the city reviews for quite awhile. I am just wondering: what is the Fort Myers River District area like?

From what I understand, this theatre sits on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River within walking distance of the marina. Other than that, I don't know too much about this area and since I will be spending most of my time here, it'd be great to get a heads up and advice about this particular area in Fort Myers.

I'd love to hear what you have to say!

I too am interested in the River District. We're considering a move to one of the historic residential areas from New England and perhaps opening a retail business in the downtown River District. Any feedback regarding what's happening in this area - positive or otherwise - would be appreciated.

HI there!

I am a local REALTOR and have been here 15 years. While I enjoy being here, and like you am a transplant from "UP NORTH" (NYC), some things just don't work. The city of Fort Myers has the downtown ripped up for 4 years replaceing utilities and adding brick to the streets. It looks pretty but isn't practical and has killed off the very businesses that they are trying to retain. Compared to a few years ago bargains abound in the Real Estate market. High rise condos that were $300-600K are now $100-300K. Riverfront homes that were $1,000,000+ are now half that.

z121532 the Florida Rep theater is in the heart of downtown but is still blocks from the river. I suggest that you do a mapquest or goggle search for a better idea of the location. Hope this helps, and good luck with the new job.

Historic areas in Fort Myers are NOTHING like what you are imagining. There is very little respect for anything historical in the area, unlike New England. It is just a different vibe. Plan a visit.

I'm originally from New England, too.
