There's been a lot of confusion, lately on this forum, regarding unemployment rates.

Comparing state unemployment rates doesn't give the full picture. One area of a state could be doing much better than another area. For instance, my area in Tennessee happens to be the lowest in the state.

For example, the June unemployment rater for Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin is 7.1. That's very good, considering the economic climate, right now. However, Cape Coral-Fort Myers' rate is 13.0. Big difference.

Also, when considering a move, please check to see what your unemployment rate is for your area, not just the state rate.

Tomorrow, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will announce the state unemployment rates for July. However, they will not announce the local area rates until later in the month. Sometimes, a news organization gets the rates for a local area, but this is not consistent across the board.

Please feel free to use this link to look up your area. When July's stats come out, I would be happy to post this link, also.

As always, I'm looking out for all of us.

Besides that 13%, I wonder how many more are, in fact, under-employed.

You know--making just enough to barely keep their heads above water....if that.

Yep, that really sucks!! But have faith!! There have been many economic downturns and ressesions over the years and things ALWAYS turn around and get stronger then even before. When the baby boomers go into full retirement mode in a number of years Florida property will rise again and folks who have held on to their homes or bought property at pennies on the dollar, will profit nicely.

Just be glad you don't live in:
1-Alabama
2-California
3-District of Columbia
4-Georgia
5-Illinois
6-Indiana
7-Kentucky
8-MICHGAN
9-Nevada
10-North Carolina
11-Ohio
12-Oregon
13-South Carolina
14-Tennessee
15-Rhode Island

All in the same boat or worse than Florida....If your going to live in a state that has high unemployment, you may as will live in a state that has no state income taxes and cheap housing. Oh, and then there's all that sunshine year round, beaches and great water everywhere as a bonus Mr.cool

I think you forgot all the great year-round theme parks.
Being rich and living in Florida, it's like a continual vacation!

Well, the problem with the area is the quality of jobs. It is mostly service-based and the pay is very low. Coming from the northern states, Florida is a real eye-opener. So when jobs recover, it is still not the place to be.

Now, having said that, swFlorida use to be very affordable regarding housing. I moved there in the 90s and it was kind of a sleepy, low-rent area. When the housing prices started going up it just wasn't worth living there. The cost of housing will make it more attractive.

The only problem is the cost of other things. Gas is traditionally higher there than a lot of places. Insurance and taxes are still pretty high. Food costs are VERY high.

Add in the problem with education and the quality of people that live there and it is a deal breaker for me.

But anyway, I just want to be clear about these unemployment rates. They vary according to area. They have just announced that the rate has dropped, across the country. Interesting to see if Lee County's have dropped. The local news is very good about leaking the number, but it will still be awhile.

Gee, Knoxville's unemployment rate is 9.3, as opposed to Fort Myer's rate of 13 percent.

Oh, wait. And we don't have a state income tax.

Our utilities and gas are really, really cheap!

And our property tax and insurance is a STEAL!

Oh my gosh, and the housing is VERY affordable.

And we sit on the Tennessee River, right next to the Great Smoky Mountains.

And the weather is BEAUTIFUL!

And the people are really, really nice!

No brainer!

Did you even read the OPs post or are you just being confrontational for the sake of it? What a shame....

For months that has been a large topic of conversation. For the majority of our friends (we are in our mid30s w/ 2 children), I'd say a good 75% of them are just getting by. The other 25% are doing great. We actually do not know anyone who is unemployed.

But, I think there are so many other variables that go into that based on how people live these days...if things get tighter, I told my dh the cable goes & so do the cell phones That would save us about $175/month. If it was up to me, they'd be gone already but we compromise.

Another scary thought is the number who do not have health insurance and what would happen should they or their children need long-term, serious health care. It's called direct bankruptcy.
