I very briefly lived in San Carlos about 12 years ago and then moved to Sarasota and then Venice. I lost my job the other day. Been there 12 years and no warning.

I was wondering if the restaurants are hiring for season in Ft. Myers, has anyone seen signs or ads? In Venice there is NOTHING going on at all. I am willing to clean, cashier, waitress, hostess, whatever (within reason...lol).

Also I have been reading through the threads and I saw that someone said to live south of Colonial. I was wondering how safe Value Place Hotel on Colonial is (4395 Colonial). At least until I can find somewhere to live. It's me and my son (he's 20).

Hi Jolie, sorry to hear about your job. After 12 years that's terrible. Right before the season is suppose to start, too. Did they close up?

I have been seeing an increase in seasonal type jobs on craigslist in the last couple of weeks:ft myers / SW florida food/beverage/hospitality jobs classifieds - craigslist

Can't tell you anything about the hotel. It seems to be pretty far from Metro Pkwy which other members have said was a bad area. Maybe someone else is familiar with the area: Google Maps

Good luck!

The unemployment rate is higher in Fort Myers. For July, it was 11.8 for Venice and 13.2 for Fort Myers. In four days, the rates will come out for August.

Anything can change, come season, but given Fort Myers' track record, I'd head to where the unemployment rate is better.

Or stay put.

Here's Craiglist for your area:

I lived in a hotel, once. It's hard to save to get out of there, once you're in.

sorry to hear about your job loss. One thing you seem to have working for you is that you are flexible enough to move right away, and you are actively looking right away. The only glimmer of hope that I may see about fort myers is that the amount of people flying into the airports had a year over year increase in august (only 1.4% more) which may be an early sign of a better "season" than last year.

I wonder about that. My best guess is it is all those people looking at houses since they heard there was a fire sale. Now maybe that will parlay into a good season if people buy and then come down in December. That would be great. If swFlorida picks up, everywhere will pick up.

Hi I saw an ad on career builder dot com, yesterday morning (a very recent post) for a waitress job in the area you are speaking of.
