I hear many harrassing stories about Being on the water. Do the Police stop and Board your vessel everytime you go out. Is it true they threaten you with Arrest and massive Tickets if you "get out of line"?

We've never been stopped, boarded or harassed by the police while on the boat.

I have lived here for almost 14 years and being a boat owner we have been on the water a lot of that time. Not once have we ever had a problem with the coast guard or police ! And not once have I ever heard of any of our friends having any problems.

We boat on Charlotte Harbor (actually just got back!) and have only seen the cops out a few times. Never had them stop us.... Yet. Where we come from on Lake Michigan, we got stopped at least twice a month for "vessel inspections", i.e. lets see if they've been drinking. It is outrageous. So far no problems. We passed a patrol boat today as we came into the Punta Gorda City Marina at Laishley Park. They waved and kept going.

Well, that's very good news, and we're looking forward to having a boat again after many years. Up here in NY, it doesn't pay, since the season is so short, but we've always loved boating.

Default Good News

Were very rarely are boarded here on LI. I guess we jumped to conclusions a bit. We just saw a program concerning Fl, not Coast Guard, um, Another Division. They were showing the 48 hr Lobster Craze in the Keys. 3 guys had their permits, they were under the 6 allowed Lobsters each. Because only one guy dove for them, they threatened them and made them toss the 11 back to the Sea. Now mind you, they all paid for their permits. So whats the beef, this is a little overboard and power happy for my taste! And I agree, unruly is grounds for Hog Tying! lolol What do you guys think? This was on the Green Planet Channel.

Lobster season is A LOT different from regular boating season.

There are A LOT of rules re: capturing lobster. I wrote an article about it for the newspaper during last years lobster season - divers need to be super careful to follow the rules or they WILL make them toss their catch back.

Technically since only one guy dove for him, he was over his limit. The others did not dive for them so they were NOT their lobsters. It was probably the FWC and I personally think they did the right thing. There are laws for a reason.
