We're long time DirecTV customers - can't beat their HD DVR offering and their ++ customer service. They are consistently rated #1 for TV services as well. Comcast? They're a monopoly and act like it. Storms don't matter if you have a DVR - watching TV live in 2010 with all those commercials is a time waster, IMO.

Comcast internet + DirecTV + Verizon $15 local service only + cell phone for all other calls.

Just like every other cable company. Cablevision is the worst.

I'm worrieed about the merger of NBC with Comcast -- how many of the channels they control will be made unavailable to satellite users?

The only thing we watch live are baseball games, or NCIS episodes as background noise at dinnertime.

Excellent point. If you or someone in your household is into sports, Direct TV is the way to go. The major leagues refuse to play with Comcast, so it is going to be a miracle to get them to play nice. On the other hand, Comcast now owns NBC so that just might have to but there is major bad blood there.

If you go dish, though, you will have to find a carrier for internet. Nothing beats Comcast. I've done tech support for SONY, BellSouth, AT&T and Comcast. Satellite through Dish is expensive and not that great. My Comcast internet runs at 12 megs.

So we stayed with DirecTV, added Extra Innings, and get to watch the YES broadcast on Extra Innings (except when the Yankees play Tampa -- then we're forced to watch the Rays feed. We just turn the sound down and listen to the WCBS 880 feed on MLB.com).

We've had some very bad storms here this spring, but lost signal only briefly. When we do, we throw in a DVD or watch stuff we recorded on the DVR.

That's an expensive solution. Comcast internet without tv has you paying much more than other folks. The only way to make that slightly more palatable is to get a very basic tv subscription. Depending where you live, you are usually better off.

The only thing missing is Versus, and HGTV (horse racing, though we do have TVG).

We have our home phone and DSL through AT&T. We've been happy with it so far.

That's great and good to know, too!

Every so often we toy with going with dish because my husband would like to watch Da Bears.

They were great when I set up our home wireless network, too -- and tech support is here in the US, not outsourced (Verizon's tech support was outsourced when I had to use it. I often had to ask for a supervisor when I had problems).

Better to go DirecTV. Their tech support is much better, and also based in the US.

We're in Dunnellon -- you probably have a different local provider.
