We are finally headed to Fort Wayne, found a rental house, whew! I'm wondering- what do the kids wear to school in the winter for outerwear? Here in MN they were required to wear (at least in Elementary) hat, jacket, snowpants, boots, mittens, etc. as long as there was any snow on the ground. And it's usually cold enough to warrant all those clothes (they only stay inside for recess if it's below zero). What is typical in Fort Wayne weather wise?

I don't think snow pants are needed ever, boots maybe if they walk through snow to the bus stop - otherwise probably not. hat, gloves, winter coat will be needed from beginning of December through end of February. Although it isn't uncommon to have a few days here or there that aren't that cold.

I would say in Fort Wayne you are going to find probably a 5 or 6 weeks stretch typically from end of December through firrst week of February where the weather is Minnesota cold - otherwise you will likely think our winters are rather mild.

wait ... the schools REQUIRED students to wear certain clothes? Hmmmm ...

In my kid's school they stay indoors if it's 32 or lower. The school leaves it up to the parents to use common sense when dressing their children for school.

When we were in SW Allen schools, most of the kids wore hats, gloves to school but packed up snowpants and boots for recess. They did go out on chilly days but if they did not have snowpants/boots they were not allowed to climb on the snow piles.

Having moved to Minneapolis at age 10 (from CA for the Blizzard of 79 OMG! )and been moved to Ft Wayne at 11 I would say the biggest change is that kids don't need to wear all their snow gear for the average winter day. But they still need to have it for playing in the snow. Glad you made it mmhl!!

Do ya want to hear about the time I waked to around Lake Harriet (MN)to school in a blizzard only to find out school was cancelled and had to walk back? Thank Goodness for my Eddie Bauer Down jacket and long wool underwear.

LOL- I've sent my kids walking to school before only to find it was cancelled too!

Domergirl- yes, if they didn't have all that gear they would sit in the office for recess, too much frostbite potential otherwise. Like i said, they go out as long as the temp is zero or above.

I believe that SW allen schools have the stay in side if it's below 32, but that is from my memory of elementary school which could very well be wrong.

At my son's school they have to go outside unless it is below zero. There is no requirement on clothing for outdoors, but it is highly recommended that they wear hat, jacket, snowpants, boots, mittens, etc. Best to check with your school to make sure.
