Hello everyone! My husband and I are relocating to Ft. Wayne, IN in early January from NYC and we're trying to decide which apartment complex to go with while we save for a house.

When we visited a few weeks ago, we looked at Brandy Chase and Pointe Inverness Apartments. I'd love to hear some of the local's opinions of these places. I can't trust my own judgement since I'm coming from a crappy one-bedroom, yet $2k per month apartment. I haven't seen an actual dishwasher in years, so I get excited over the dumbest stuff. Please help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, if you want to throw in any tips or thoughts on the area as a whole, that's always welcome!

Thanks Ft. Wayne!!!!

I can't comment on apartments, but compared to NYC, the low cost will shock you. If your income is anywhere close to what you made in NYC, you will do very well here. Food prices are also low.

It gets quite cold here(a little colder than NYC)in winter but is doesn't snow a lot. Summers can be hot and humid, but you are already used to that!

People here are NICE. But, please, don't expect much big city life. You can drive 3 hours to Chicago for that.

There are quite a few posters that will chime in to help you. Welcome!

You may even want to consider renting a house!

I hope you enjoy living in our state.

Thanks so much for responding! I'm truly looking forward to the move. I grew up in the midwest (Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois..) so it'll be nice to come back. My husband on the other hand...lol....grew up in the NYC and lived in LA for a little while. He doesn't really understand yet that the rest of the country is a bit different from those areas. He's a great and personable guy though, so I'm sure Indiana will like him.

NYC & LA ... wow, the midwest is a flyover for him! At least you'll be helpful in guiding him toward the midwest state of mind.

Unhappy He is going to freakout!!!!

Hope he is ready for a culture shock.... As far as an apartment. You may want to look at The Reserves at Dawson's Creek. Different floor plans and condo style apartments with 1 or 2 car garages.

Hey - over 6 years ago my wife and I made a similar move (Westchester NY) to Fort Wayne. There's apartments (and available houses) everywhere... best advice I can give is don't decide until after you investigate several since like you my wife and I were reverse-sticker shocked (we ended up jumping at a house not just an apartment a bit too fast).

For rent in the 600s you should be able to get something "really" nice around here... if you pay much over that I'd say you might be over paying (this is definitely a good market for a renter - too many places available right now). Actually we stayed at Point Inverness Apartments paid for by the company which relocated us... but worth noting the rent is incredibly inflated there (at least the furnished place we were at) so when the paid corporate housing time period was up we bought quickly partially out of $ pressure. Also worth noting, I wouldn't want to rent anywhere you don't have a carport or garage... come January and February and part of March you'll appreciate not having to scrape your car nor waiting a long time for it to heat up. We don't get much snow but we do get a good share of freezing rain and ice some years in Jan-March.

Regarding eventually finding a house to live... don't rush into it. My wife and I fell in love with a house our first week here... I wouldn't recommend anyone else do that until you really get to know the area. I have a preference for the SouthWest (SW) area of Fort Wayne and live there, but there's so many homes in this area I'd wait to see a lot before settling.

One last thing - Rt 14 (the western part of Illinios Rd) is about to undergo major construction... starting in the Spring right next to exit 105 of the 69 (rt 14 and hadley rd), and then extending out towards Scott Rd the road will be expanded a lane in each direction and lights with turning lanes added. The construction will reach its final phase in the Fall of 2008. I'd look for a rental off that route because it will be a congested mess for most of 2008.
