Arlington Heights area (Bryan, Crockett, Bowie: apartment complex, condos, crime)

I'll be moving to FTW in December and have started looking at apartments in the area. I was told it was best for a young professional like myself (just turned 25) to live in the west part of part of FTW because of the atmosphere and relative location to popular attractions. Is this true? Ive done a little research and have found quite a few reasonably priced apartments (my range for now is between $400-$550) in this area. I was also told to check out places on S. Hulen, Camp Bowie, and Bryant Irvin... are these good areas to check out or am I wasting my time? I obviously want to live in a nice/safe area and not too far from the social scene, but right now I simply can't afford $800 (or thereabouts) in rent. I will be in FTW next week to check out what I've come across so far, so any further input is appreciated!

I grew up in Arlington Heights (I still live close by). I think it is an excellent area indeed.

I have not looked for an apartment for many, many years. However, my oral hygienist, a young lady around 25, was telling me about her apartment on Seventh Street at Crockett (note that Camp Bowie Boulevard, as it continues east, becomes Seventh Street, which takes you downtown).

This area (not really in Arlington Heights, but east of that area, and still in the desireable 76107 zip code) is a thriving place for younger professionals. Several excellent restaurants have sprung up in the apartment complex area, and there is a Movie Tavern right in the middle of it. I believe all the apartments have covered parking in the parking garages. Easy to get to downtown (if that is where you will work, a five minute drive) or to I-30 (should you need that).

As for "south Hulen", I guess you mean south of I-20. Lots of apartments for sure, plus you have Hulen Mall close by. The traffic is becoming a problem. Also note that Hulen itself, down where it crosses the Trinity River, is a bit of a mess due to construction (single lanes to cross the bridge). However, there are lots of apartments along 'middle' Hulen, just south of the river.

I would probably avoid any apartments on Bryant Irvin. Of course, growing up it was a rather 'bad' area stretching along much of its length, although I believe it is upgrading.

the "active social area" in FTW also included the area called So7--which is the developing area across the Trinity from downtown FTW--
where the old Montgomery Ward warehouse has been turned into retail/condos and there is other development going on now...
there are also apts in FTW Sundance Sq area which would be very close to Sundance and the So7 area
I guess most of them might be out of your price range since they are newer and popular

check out on on-line crime map to see where different areas are vulnerable

MAYBE river park drive for that price...if sharing a two bedroom? but no social scene there...just a place to sleep. Then take the trails to university drive or further up to camp bowie area.
