(Copied from my Dallas posting)

My husband and I are looking to relocate to the Keller area soon. We are planning on living off our savings for 6 months. I am very nervous about the move but we have been talking about Keller for years. We finally feel it's time to take the plunge. I am an IT Trainer/Curriculum Developer/Instructional Designer working on my Ph.D and he is a Correction Officer. Here in New York, Correction Officers have Peace Officer status. We understand that this is not the case in Texas. I would like for him to get on the Dallas PD/Fort Worth PD (?) or perhaps work in one of the smaller town PDs. Any law enforcement on board? Any advice for us?

As for me, there seems to be lot of positions that I qualify for and I have just started submitted my resume. I would love to have a job before making the move but I am worried I will not be considered since I have a New York address. Anyone in my field on board? Any idea on what the average salary is? I don't want to price myself out of the market. I know I wont make what I make now and I am okay with it. We can't wait to get to TX. We have a son and it's important to us that he is brought up in a place with good values, good schools, and a moderate cost of living. We are so done with New York.

Wow, you sound exactly like my husband and I. He works in NYC (we live in NJ) but we are trying our best for a Texas relocation ourselves. He has a few resumes out there (also IT) but is is so hard finding a job long distance. I'm curious to hear the response to your post.

Both of us are too chicken to live off savings though. He is trying his best to find a job first but if nothing happens, we may do the same thing.

I am not in enforcement, but most cities have police forces. I would google each city (Keller, Roanoke, Fort Worth, Saginaw, Arlington, White Settlement - just as a few) and look at their job postings on their city site. There is also County Sheriffs as well.

One of my realtors had a family member that was with Dallas and honestly, I don't think I would want my husband to work with, but it depends if maybe he was with NYPD? Fort Worth has a good sized police force.

Thanks! Hey, do you know anyone who successfully migrated to Texas without having a job offer first?!? Am I totally crazy?

I don't, but we had some friends that were trying to do it from Maryland, they ended up not moving down here.

I wouldn't worry too much about your address. There are a lot of people migrating into Texas, so you won't surprise too many hiring managers. As long as they know they aren't having to pay your move, I wouldn't let that hold you back. Of course, having a job first is preferable. I would start pushing hard with your resume. You will want to have jobs well within commutability because you don't want to say have your husband working in Dallas and you in Fort Worth and then move to somewhere where you would have a horrific commute.

You wouldn't want to live in one city and commute to another as far as Dallas and Fort Worth. There are cities that are surrounding each city and fill in the gap. Plenty of beautiful houses, communities and fun down here, you just should get a good grasp on where you will work first.

DH isn't law enforcement but his best friend is DPD. Coming from another state, your husband's law enforcement status may or may not transfer here. This website will give you answers: TCLEOSE - Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education - Home I can tell you that if he is not currently a TCLEOSE certified sworn peace officer, he will have to go through an academy. Here are a couple of links: Community Services - Regional Police Academy - NCTCOG.org Tarrant County College - Police Academy
I can tell you that VERY few suburbs will sponsor a rookie officer through an academy because it is expensive, and they already have enough experienced officers who apply for their positions. (Most officers only stay with DPD for the minimum required, then transfer to suburbs.)

Also, Keller is a nice place to live, but he probably will not be able to do Fort Worth PD, and definitely will not be able to do Dallas PD, living there. This is because he will be too far away from his duty station. Both of those departments require officers to live within 30 minutes' drive, and only half of Fort Worth and none of Dallas is within 30 minutes' drive from Keller.

One thought is to go work for the Tarrant County Sheriff's department. Tarrant County Sheriff's Office They run the Fort Worth Jail, and are always looking for COs. I will warn you that the pay is low...but they may look at an out-of-state applicant.

Good luck!!

I know someone in your field here with the same education, background, and even very diverse other backgrounds. This person is very intelligent and an excellent instructor. They are now working as a course developer at $45K/year and have been there for 2 years now. According to this person they do not expect to see a raise any time soon and are just happy to be employed. There has been talk about outsourcing their position and they are waiting for the word.

As for your husband and LEO work here that will be difficult. The major PD's are having a field day with the number of applicants, many are cutting back on their forces through normal retirements and normal attrition rates. The state troopers are also very selective and are looking for much younger recruits.

$45k a year? That's awful! I work with IT technical writers, which is one step down from being an instructional designer, and they make in the $70k - $80k range. I spoke to one of my technical writer colleagues, and they have friends who are IT Instructional designers in this area making between $90k - $100k.

I don't have any advice about moving down here without a job - I moved down here from Chicago about 18 months ago, but I was relocated with my company, so didn't have to look for a job. My husband is a freelance photographer, and he found work at a big box retailer to supplement his income while he builds his photography business.

The good news is there are plenty of job postings for what I do. I see several new ones every day. I just got a call for a 2 year contract position in Dallas making MORE than I make here in NY. So, my plan, I need to plug along and keep testing the water but I am NOT leaving until I secure employment. Also, my dream of all dreams is the day I go to give my notice at my company, they tell me to stay and relocate me to our office in Texas. I have casually mentioned wanting to see our Texas office so I hope I planted the seed. When I get enough courage, I will eventually speak to my boss about it. Who knows. I think anything is possible.
