When to start watering lawns? Mine is starting to grow and will need mowing soon, but when should I start putting water on it?

(first time homeowner.)

Now. You should start as soon as the lawn begins growing.

My neighbors will also water, on occasion, during the winter (especially if a dry winter).

Remember to now overwater.

I once asked a person (yard worker) how I should know when to water the grass. He said "if you walk on the grass, and the blades do not spring back up after you stepped on them, then it is the time". Indeed, several years later I believe he was correct. There is quite a difference between blades that spring back after walking on them, and those that stay flat.
