Whenever I've gone to Ridgmar in the weekday evenings for the past few years, it's been very quiet. I prefer the lighter traffic, but have always wondered how the stores can survive. Maybe it's more crowded on weekends or holidays.

I find it interesting that this regional mall features Neiman Marcus as an anchor, but seems rather unable to attract upscale specialty stores for in-line tenants.

I live near this mall and I have to agree. It is a struggling mall; I would say it's a step away from being completely dead. I was there on Friday at noon and there was not one person there with a shopping bag. In fact, I counted 15 vacant store fronts on the lower level alone. UNREAL!!!! I didn't have the time to to explore the upper level, but I can only imagine how many vacant store fronts there are. As for the anchors, Neiman Marcus is supposedly moving to 7th street downtown in the next couple years, so that's definitely going to hurt the mall even more. And JCPenney? They've been losing money for six years. Who knows how long they'll last. So that leaves Dillards, Macys and Sears, which are the 3 anchors at Hulen Mall just a few miles away. Ridgmar is extremely desolte. The absolute most lively place in the building is the play area. On one wing of the mall, [I think the Neimans and Dillards wings especially] there are about 3-5 vacant store fronts. Don't even get me started about the Neimans wing. It's simply wasted space. And it saddens me, because this is my hometown mall. I plan to visit again soon so I can explore further.

Both the Dillards and the NM at Ridgmar are the worst examples of their stores in the area- not b/c of bad employees or anything; they just don't have the space to carry a good selection of anything. I needed suits for my boys recently and the selection at Dillards was dismal and NM (where my husband gets all of his dress clothes) had nothing for children as far as suits! They carry some casual stuff for kids and dresses for girls at NM Ridgmar but that's it. We ended up going to North Park in Dallas. The time we spent driving to Dallas from Aledo ended up to be less than all the driving around and calling I had done trying to track down what we needed. I have a soft spot for Ridgmar too but they need to get with the times. I will say the Rave theater there is very well run!

It's amazing the amount of visitor traffic that goes straight into and out of those doors leading to the Rave Theater without hardly any of them actually going into the mall itself. I would say that arid gnats days are numbered. I would say that there could be hope for it to be torn down and replaced with a large mixed use project similar to The Domain in Austin, but I'm not sure that the area is quite right for that , especially in the face of much stronger locations nearer to downtown.

I was there just this past weekend and Ridgmar Mall was indeed a sad and lonely place. But then this was announced in the Star Telegram this week:

H&M plans to open Ridgmar mall store in the fall | The Star Telegram The Star Telegram

Looks like Ridgmar is getting a facelift and at least one new store which should generate some heavier traffic.
