I am looking to retire in a few years. Starting research on areas with some natural beauty and a slower pace of life. I would appreciate information on areas which would interest a couple looking for a laid back
lifestyle without alot of traffic and urban sprawl!

Trophy Club would probably make a good place to retire. Keller is traffic and sprawl madness. Roanoke is basically new suburban with a dash of old.

There's also Robson Ranch which is further West/North - if golfing out in the boonies is your thing.

Trophy club is almost built out...except for the proposed shopping development...it's not that huge and really not alot of entry and exit points so it stays pretty quiet. Lots of families and family oriented community things go on. Alot of retirees here from what I see...if you like golf walking, running or biking this may be the place for you. The golf club offers golf/tennis and swimming with membership but there is a local pool and tennis courts as well. TC has a maximum speed limit of 30mph (heavily enforced) so as a result you can now drive your golf buggy around the town to run your errands if thats your thing. They have a dog park if you have 4 legged friends and are currently working on finishing the bike trail. Then you have Trophy Club Park-I suggest you look it up as it has a multiple things going on there...if you like to canoe/boat or fish you have access to that. Overall it's a pretty quiet town ....but still close to the shopping in Southlake and Roanoke (which I might add has some great eating places)....close to Texas motor speedway if that helps. The main roads leading to TC are almost completed making travelling in and out of town alot easier. Most of the traffic in town is very minor and that is usually early morning..but then it really isn't what I would call real traffic problems.

Robson Ranch really is nice, and if you are looking for a golf course community with peace and quiet, you will not find anything better.

Trophy Club is also nice. I know several retired couples who love it there. The only catch is many of the homes are older, especially if you want to be on the golf course.

Keller is NOT a retirement community at all. It is full of young families, traffic, and sprawl.

That is not necessarily true....alot more housing has been and is in the process of being built and it is right on the golf course-the older side of town would partially reflect this but certainly not the TCP side. Go for a drive down behind Harmony Park and look at all the new development going on in there and also at the end of TC Drive...all brand new ...right on the course-of course it comes at a premium price $$$

if you are looking for "natural beauty" forget Robson Ranch--
it is built out in the prairie w/ only builder supplied trees--
flat as a pancake and nothing besides the tract homes to look at...

IF you want something that is more than suburban sprawl you probably need to get out of the metroplex more
Trophy Club is just as car intensive as Keller (and harder to get in/out of IMO) since there is new construction in that area and you will be doing most of your shopping in Southlake or N Keller area
at least there is hospital out that way now...

Consider Possum Kingdom Lake area
or some in east TX if you like pine trees
many people retire to the Texas Hill Country--
following the chain of lakes down to Kerrville area
many lakeside lots are on dry land with the drought and the landscape is more like New Mexico but still attractive...and plenty of small towns
Stephenville might be one to consider--close to Metroplex but not urban sprawl or Weatherford...

No on Keller...it is not very attractive and lacks community identity. Yes on Roanoke and Trophy Club as far as proximity to urban convenience and DFW airport, plus shopping. Others to think about:

Mt. Vernon (about 1.5 hrs east of Dallas, lake community)
Granbury (about 45 min from FTW, lake community)
Eagle Mountain Lake
Jefferson (about 1 hour east of Dallas, quaint community)
Rockwall (Dallas burb on lake)
Benbrook (FTW burb)
Waxahachie (cute town about 50 min south)

You need to consider what you expect when you retire
if you want to have amenities like shopping at more than WalMart or Family Dollar within a 30 min drive then many of the areas on that list you can cross off

why are you even considering moving to this area when you retire?
do you have family in DFW? past relationship with area--like you worked here before?
DFW is one of the fastest growing areas in TX so there is plenty of urban sprawl--
and other areas like Tyler, Victoria, the Hill Country--they are all growing apace...

in fact to my way of thinking there is urban sprawl over most of Texas now except for the less desireable places like the extremeties of TX...

I am not discouraging you to come--but just wonder what motivated you to consider an area that you apparently don't know personally...

There are probably more than a dozen senior developments for retirees/empty nesters built in the last couple of years. Keller is situated between FTW and Southlake, and yes the traffic has picked up a lot there in the the last couple of years as it fills out. Much of that is exasperated by the simultaneous work on I35 to the West, Airport Freeway/820 to the south and the DFW mixmaster in Grapevine to the east. Relief for much of that is coming next year. For retirees though, we have the advantage not getting out on the roads on non rush hour periods.. Very nice and inexpensive public golf course, only a few miles from top notch shopping and dining, including Southlake Town Square, lots of local restaurants, medical and new hospital facilities nearby.
