Are there any other interesting areas that would be a bit closer to work?
The areas closer to your work are either suburban (Fossil Creek, Alliance, Saginaw, Keller, etc.) or run-down inner city areas (near north side of FW and, to a lesser extent, parts of Haltom City) I would advise against for safety and other obvious reasons.

Keller Town Center is somewhat of an option (mixed-use apartments, condos and retail) and it's right next to City Hall and the Keller Pointe community center, plus, it's not far from old town Keller. You might check that out. I have a friend who lives there and loves it that he lives "upstairs" from his favorite bar.

North Richland Hills has a similar area called The Venue at Hometown at Precinct Line Rd. & Boulevard 26. Again, mixed use new-urban development next to the library and the brand new community center, all walkable.

Don't know if you can rent for your budget, though...
