I know you've said you'll be home-schooling, but real estate in the area can be hugely driven by school districts in terms of value and desirability. And in general, but not always, these can be some of the safer areas too (but not always!).
This is great advice. Make sure you are west of Cooper Street! Can't stress that enough as far as nice area and as far as resale.

We've lived in Crowley for 5 years and will be moving to Houston in mid June. The Crowley/Burleson has been great to us, and has everything we need close by. This doesn't sound like it will matter to you, but the school district is not good, but that can be said for just about all ISD's in Ft Worth, aside from maybe grapevine/colleyville.

The homes are cheap this far south of town and the property taxes are quite a bit less...having said that, there are TONS of new construction, so resale is a problem, unless you plan on staying for quite some time.

I work at JPS (Allen and I-35W) and it takes me about 17 minutes to get to work, and another 23 minutes to get home. For some strange reason I-35 south of FW is 3-4 lanes the whole time and I-35 north of FW has some awful bottlenecks (I believe they're working on this, but the progress is SLOW).

We'll be putting our house up for rent mid June because the market hasn't quite recovered down here coupled with the new construction.
