Well, TXDOT broke ground on the reconstruction of 35W from 820 on the north where it is being widened into downtown to connect with where it has already been widened headed south. 4 llllooooonnnngggg years of very slow traffic, road closures, etc for all to look forward to.

Enjoy and remember that when the work is done....the road will already be overloaded again.

Sounds like smart growth.

Another freeway "expansion" project where they keep the existing free lane count the same and add overpriced toll lanes nobody will use. Gotta love it. Money well wasted.

just big business in action--helping themselves under the guise of public service
Thank your governor, legislature, and voters who don't have a clue as to what the NTX Toll authority is really doing...

Looks like the anti-freeway posters are at it again.

I will admit I do not like the split freeway/tollway design. Looks very confusing.

That said, the widening of 35W is very overdue. Traffic is a nightmare on 35W, and increasing the width from 2 to 6 lanes in each direction will triple the capacity that 35W can handle. Traffic won't be as miserable as it is now until the number of cars triples. Keep in mind it has taken over half a century for traffic to get to where it is now.

Here as a video of the plans north of 820: even more lanes until 287 branches off, then 5 lanes.

I'd prefer more RAIL projects, but you'd be a fool to think that this is a waste of money.

For one thing, this isn't news. People have known about the widening of that section for years. They've already started.

For a city our size, we can't have 2 lane interstates anymore. Austin has the same issue, except we actually have the room and infrastructure already in place to make it easier to expand...

Thanks for posting those visualization videos! can't wait for the project to be done and have that much more room to move around. Yeah, ditto on the toll but apparently we don't pay enough taxes for our government to build the highways without involving private businesses that want a cut of our commute.
