My cousin, who will be in 8th grade this coming school year, will be moving to live with my wife and me. We currently live near downtown Fort Worth, but because the middle school in our district isn't great, we are looking to move elsewhere. I'd like some advice on what our best option is.

Background about us:
My wife works at a hospital in the hospital district of FW. We typically like older homes in historic neighborhoods, but that seems to be an impossibility to also be in a good school district. I am self-employed and can work almost anywhere.

Background about my cousin:
She had some difficulty in school this year, and we've had some tough family situations come up during the last year. Middle school is a formative time, and she's had a habit of choosing some less than ideal peers. I want to choose a school that will limit those opportunities as much as possible.

We can rent or buy, although with this timeframe I think renting is our best option. Our budget is $1600/month. Here are my thoughts on a few districts:

Birdville ISD and Keller ISD: These are the two I've primarily considered, but I may not be able to get over the housing options we have in Keller. We've looked at several houses, but they are all tract homes that are relatively new. It's suburbia at it's finest (or worst). Birdville seems to have a little bit of older housing stock, but I don't know that any of it counts as historic.

Southlake and Colleyville: I'm mostly opposed to these simply because I'm not sure that I love the idea of putting her in such a homogeneous environment (read: wealthy white kids everywhere). I'm not convinced that TAKS scores tell the entire story, as it's certainly true that rich white kids tend to do better on those exams, so ISDs with a high percentage of kids from that demographic will certainly perform well. I'm sure these schools are great academically, but I don't like the social ramifications. Also, they're mostly pretty expensive except for the part of Colleyville that draws from north Euless.

Coppell and Plano: I think they're too far away...

So, am I overlooking any great options?
