The only overwhelming reason to take the train is if you think there will be heavy traffic on the roads and you want to avoid that. My sister used to take the train from Austin to Ft. Worth a lot.
But you forget about the wear-and-tear on the car. It's not just the hundreds of miles to get to Houston/Galveston but also the miles traversing the Houston area to visit, eat, and shop. IH-45 is empty compared to IH-35 with all the congested cities along the route.

Houstonians really don't visit North Texas. Seems your so desperate judging by the tone-deaf "Visit Dallas for the holidays" radio commercial I heard last night, in the midst of the oil recession here and our own holiday celebrations around the metro. Austin/San Antonio are much closer and San Antonio is on the interstate. Might as well catch a flight at IAH to visit Los Angeles (most common flight) or some other exotic place instead of visiting Dallas/Fort Worth.

The feeling is mutual. Not many people in DFW visit Houston. I know more people who'd drive to Austin or Colorado.

Likewise, we have the best airport in Texas. We are likely to hop on flights as cheap as $200 round trip to go somewhere
