I've been offered a job working for American Airlines in their headquarters in Ft. Worth. This has us move from our current Tampa, Fla. Home. We are looking for a suburb that:

-is exciting
-has good schools (our kids are 16, 12, and 8)
-Is near either Downtown Dallas or Ft. Worth
-is relatively wealthy, has nice gated communities.
Any suggestions?

Colleyville or Southlake would fit your needs. Colleyville had GCISD schools that are very well-regarded and Southlake's Carroll ISD also gets good scores. Both are about 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth and 30 minutes from downtown Dallas. AA HQ is 15 minutes' drive straight down 360.

Bedford has a few gated communities, but not many.

I'll back ChristieP on this. Colleyville and Southlake are excellent places. I really like Southlake, it's beautiful.

We live in Hurst and love it here but there are no gated communities.

why do you want gated community
the crime that Tampa has is not really relevant to living in DFW areas for the most part if you are looking at middle class or above value home...
even in Southlake and Colleyville there are not really that many gated communities vs all the others...

if you want gated--check out westlake Vaquero where the Jonas brothers bought/moved recently--

what price range are you looking at--and make sure you understand the tax structure here--much higher proportionately than in FL...

I agree that there is no need for a gated community here in NE Tarrant County. We've lived here in Grapevine for 6 years now, and we have NEVER been the victim of ANY type of crime. People on my street leave their garage doors open, stuff in the yards, etc. There are a few gated communities that I know of here, but I have no desire to live in them!

I meant to ask the OP's price range. BIG difference, since $500k won't buy much beyond a toolshed in Colleyville or Southlake...but it buys a NICE place in Grapevine!

yes Price will be the determining factor.
Agree that gated here is more for the "prestige factor" than for crime.

How big? bedrooms? lot size, garage size etc... will ALL factor in.

If your price is between 500k-800k+ then yes look in Southlake, Colleyville or Westlake

If your price is 300k-500k then look in Keller or Grapevine.

all 3 school districts offer great schools. Caroll isd (southlake) Grapevine Colleyville ISD and Keller ISD. (Keller HS and or Central HS)

If you are working in FT worth you don't want to live near Downtown Dallas, that commute wouln't be too fun.

AA is that located at DFW? if so then your options open up to Coppell as well great schools could probably find what you want between 400-600k

(my price numbers are based on 3000+ sqft 4bd 3ba 3 car gargage on a decent size lot)

AA's HQ is at 360 and 183 just south of DFW. You could commute from Coppell or Lewisville (I have a friend who does this), but with the upcoming 114/121 reconstruction, it won't be fun...

look a little harder than 800K if you are looking in Westlake--starts at 1M

360 N/S runs right past AA pretty much and that is straight shot out of Grapevine/Colleyville/north Euless area and Lewisville is not that difficult if you know some back roads vs 121 which is a pain in the patooty during rush hour...

Coppell schools are very strong as are Grapevine Colleyville and Lewisville and Carroll
those price ranges are 400K+
if you are looking at 300-400+--Birdville ISD has some nice areas--
Southern Hills in Keller ISD (I think) has some really nice newer homes in 500K+ range with wooded larger lots--not to far from Mid-Cities that goes E to 360

I would check into Southlake as it matches what you are wanting. The schools there are top notch and it is family-oriented. It is for the most part a very wealthy area, so there are a lot of nice gated communities and very nice houses. Southlake is very close to AA headquarters and is close to both Downtown Dallas and Downtown Fort Worth.

the OP did not give his price range
"relatively wealthy" is a relative term
and once again there are NOT that many gated communities in Southlake--newer communities that are gated are required to have fire sprinklers built into homes I believe due to probem with access if there is fire/emergency--some of the gates are not manned and getting them to open to fire department was problamatic at times I believe...

also if communities are gated--those roads are private property--the homeowners are required to pay for all resurfacing/maintenance which makes for a hefty assessment when they have to be redone...and police cannot issue tickets as easily if people speed or break laws since they do not have access...
