We have lived in this home for past 8 years and never had any significant problem w/ bugs of any kind.
In past 3 wks we have several episodes where small ants...not carpenter...not fire ants...have appeared in our master bath...
This room is on corner of the house--2 exterior walls.

We have not had them show up in any other room even though in the kitchen we have had fruit sitting on counter, dog bowl on floor...

We have sprayed outside w/insect spray husband bought at Lowe's and used ant spray in can inside...
I don't like using exterminator inside if can avoid...and like I said for past 8 yrs...no problems...
But we can't find the intrusion point...where they are coming from...so guess we don't have option
But just wondered if anyone else has had similar problem lately?

I always thought summer was the bad time for ants...coming inside for water...

Ants are looking for Winter residence and if left unchecked will continue coming in. Possibly in the area you are seeing them they have an exterior colony. Now they are inside most likely through very small openings including brick weepholes. Also many bathrooms have not been properly completed during construction. Toilets, tubs, and showers at slab level have openings through the slab purposely for setting the fixture's plumbing traps. Once completed they should fully grout these in and many times they do not. Some times the grout shrinks and creates openings allowing the ants in.

What can work well is the use of Diatomaceous Earth (DE) https://richsoil.com/diatomaceous-earth.jsp . Since you have dogs this is a very safe thing to use inside. The ants like to hide so if you sprinkle some around the baseboards it helps. If you can get to the bottom of cabinets and under tubs and sprinkle some there that is good too. For cabinets just drill a hole or two for the insertion points. You can get plugs at craft shops to close off the holes. Buy the plugs before you drill so you know what size bit to use. If you use the small ones the holes are almost unnoticeable.

I use a combination of ant baits, liquid ant bait such as Terro and also dry granules like amdro and it seems to have stopped the tidal wave of ants coming into my master bathroom/ shower. My house is 10 years old now so I'm not sure whether the age has played a part in some of the construction aging!

We had exterminator out yesterday
He sprayed in and out, top and bottom floors and 3 garages
He used bait/gel in only master bath since that was really only place we had seen them
Today we found big stream in the dog's food bowl...
She ate later yesterday night and my husband didn't take up what she left and throw it in garbage disposal...

Could not find where their trail started...
Were not in bathroom
Could not see any trail except for the swarm along kitchen island and dog bowl

I called exterminator and they will come back out Thurs
Guy said there might be more activity but since he only put gel-bait out in bathroom I want it down in all areas of downstairs...

We go out of town for Xmas+ and want them contained if I can
Emptying stuff out of pantry that was opened like spaghetti and sugar
Even if have not seen them in there

Where do you get Terro? Or diatomaceous earth??

You can get DE at any hardware store. Home Depot sells it.

I read somewhere that Terro only attracts a certain type of ant, and wasn't going to waste time trying to identify what types of ants I had in my house so I got a combination baits/ liquid gels. hope they take care of the problem!

Anyone had the "crazyants"--the kind that disrupt electrical stuff and can cause power outages?
